Recommend me a slicer.

Maybe consider this, too;

Blade Length 3-1/2″

Steel 8Cr13MoV

Handle is 38.1mm wide.

Handle thickness; 0.9mm.

Blade thickness, at the thickest part; 0.25mm.

The blade is very large and wide, but very thin, and with a, relative to other blades, very thin handle

cold steel knives are good but are usually built more like the edged prybar haha. gritillian holds an edge well and is very sharp. great for taking down boxes!

Kershaw 1790 Turbulence. Costs about $40 and has a great profile and thin blade for slicing just about anything you want to cut with it. Comes shaving sharp right out of the box and it's easy to sharpen back up.

Wow everyone thanks so much for the awesome replies! And thank you Ulf for the pic! Lots of great suggestions, and you've definitely convinced me to try out an Opinel #8 or #9, or maybe even their slim series. the price is right and the blade geometry looks awesome. How's the edge retention on their carbon steel? I couldn't find steel specifics on their website. As for the recommendations for the Spydie Military, I've handled one and the handle is just too long for my smaller-medium hands. The Cali 3.5 however, seems almost perfect for my needs. If anyone has a Cali 3.5 and pics they want to share, please do. I'd love to see how it compares in size to my current work knife: The FFG Endura 4. Thanks so much!

The slim line is prolly more flexible than you want, makes a great fillet knife. You're not gonna get a slim handle in an Opinel but you couldn't find a more non-threatening knife in regards to discretion of carry. I pouch carry or stuff a rag/bandanna in my (back) pocket to hold it upright.

The inox is about like a decent carbon steel, easy to sharpen, holds an edge fairly well, and touches up very quickly. The blade geometry keeps it cutting even when a bit dull. The carbon is a little softer. I would go with the stainless.

I'll let someone else compare it to something like 8cr13mov. My *swag* (scientific wild a** guess) would be that it would need a little more touch up but that I could keep it more like a razor.

Thanks for the advice, looking closer I see that the slim line is a bit *too* slim.

The carbon is close to 1086 at 56 rc. It doesn't hold an edge as well as old Schrade USA 1095 at 58rc.

The Inox is Sanvick 12C27 at 58Rc and comparable to good 1095 or Bucks 420HC.

For edge retension, I would pick Inox. For toughness like needed for hitting staples, I would get Carbone.

How about Spyderco Gayle Bradley,tough,well built,excellent slicer,tough to beat.

What is your price range? You will get a few of "for just a little more..." but it'll help narrowing down suggestions.

I traded away my Military for the same reason you are not considering it... I couldn't be more happier with what I got for it, but all that said, once I sent it out I really wanted Military again, (not more then what I got for it).

I have been really pleased with my Kershaw Lonerocks. I have the folder and the fixed. The have a good feel, somewhat thin blades, and super sharp out-of-the-box. Great slicers.

Aside from price limit, you may want to have a list of "must have" features. That will narrow down your selection.

For example

* Production knife
* Steel 154cm, S30V, etc.
* length: Small, Mid size, large. (Make sure to find out the knife length limit where you live or you may visit.)
* Type of lock: liner lock, frame lock, AXIS lock, spine lock, etc)
* Type of Handle: G10, FRN, wood, etc.

By doing this, you can narrow down considerably. Good luck.

Spyderco manix 2 in cpm-s110v. The leaf shaped FFG blade w/ spydiehole is about ideal for slicing. The lock is strong and ambidextrous. The handle is lightweight, but still plenty strong. The cpm-s110v is pretty resistance to corrosion and has incredible wear resistance, while still being pretty tough. All this in a knife that's not really that expensive. I'd think it's a winner for you.

Everything suggested here pales in comparison to an Opinel type thin blade in slicing capability. My PM2 is everything nice, but it isn't a slicer. Any kitchen knife slices better.

This. I had to cut some of that spray-foam, and even a razor knife wouldn't do it. Opinel 6 would push-cut that with ease. The wife was trying to cut corks for a project, and nothing would cut cleanly. Thicker blades drag when trying to get through the cork. Opinel to the rescue again.

Rum Monkey, here's a couple quick, cruddy cell phone comparison shots of the Caly 3.5 and Endura 4 FFG. Both are pretty new to me; I had a Caly 3 that I was just never crazy about and eventually sold. Picked up the 3.5 a couple months ago and have been loving it.

ZDP-189 versions of both.
