Hello gents, I would like to ask your for your opinions on the Sodbuster variants that are on the market. I'd like to get one sometime to carry around everyday as they look attractive, functional and inoffensive i.e perfect for UK edc but don't know much about the available ones.

I've seen a few when searching the web and I particularly like the orange one made by GEC like this (but in orange..) http://www.mikesknives.co.uk/6.html, does anyone have any experience with these?

Any experience or advice with each brand's version of a sodbuster is welcome!

thanks

This is my latest. Its only a few days old but its rock solid thus far and feels and looks better than any other Sodbuster I have owned or looked at.

I've had the Case large and small sodbusters, in both CV and SS, both are well made knives for the money. I bought the Great Eastern sodbuster, farm and field tool, with black scales. Great user, no one cares if you use it either. The orange handles of the original offering of the FF tool, might turn a few heads just because orange is a noticeable color.

Now that is the exact one that I liked the most! do they still come with the 'red neck' print on the pivot?

No they don't use the "redneck" name anymore, unfortunately. I think there was a copyright infringement or something along those lines. You might be fortunate enough to find a used one somewhere. Now you're just stuck with 'Farm & Field Tool'.

I like the small Case in CV. I don't have a GEC, but have heard good things about their Sodbuster.
You could also go the custom route, but don't know if you want to send that much. I really like my KHnutbuster.

I'm by no means a rich man so I'd like to keep it affordable. Obviously a custom from the US would be drastically cheaper than over here due to the exchange rate though..

Does anyone know of a US Knife shop that will ship to Britain?

What steel is better, gec's 1095 or cases cv? I used a gec knfie a while back and it was nice and sharp!

Case gets low marks from me on their SS, but their CV is pretty good. I would still take GEC's 1095 over their CV, but I don't think you could go wrong with Case CV. I don't know if they still make sodbusters with CV blades though. Might all be SS.

I recommend a different Sodbuster. I've been delighted by Queen Cutlery's Country Cousin in D2, thicker handles (better in hand) than the CASE version. Comes in their deep yellow or black. Once sharpened that D2 is up for all tasks. Oh and I'm in Europe too so you can get hold of them, with patience and cultivation of connexions....

Thanks, Will

Both the GEC and Queen CC are tops in my book, the CC carries significantly smaller as well if that is of importance.

Then there's the Böker Sodbuster from Argentina. A bit crude and approximate in construction but their carbon gets keen and the knife exhibits great W&T.

They still do. I was looking online yesterday and found a yellow Case Jr. Sodbuster with a CV blade. That's the only reason I know. I think it was around $25 shipped too.

Case still makes the small Sod Buster (Jr.) in CV (3137 CV), but not the larger one, which was available until a few years ago. Both large and small versions are available in stainless. The larger CV versions (yellow 3138 CV) occasionally turn up on the 'auction site', but they're usually kinda pricey. You have to know you want one, to spend the $$ (I bought two, when I found them :D).

Older carbon steel versions from Case weren't marked as 'CV', but likely used the same steel. Those were simply marked by pattern number (smaller '2137', larger '2138'), and were handled in black delrin. Those would all likely be 1970s vintage or earlier; don't remember if any of them extended into the 1980s (don't think I've seen one).

I should add, I'd like to get one that I can carry around with me in public, so the blades cutting edge will need to fall short of 75mm (3")! I wouldn't like to buy such a lovely pocket knife that I couldn't legally use everyday.

are there any cheaper alternatives that make the sodbuster style knife? I know 'whitby' do but the knives were a little too crude for my liking..

Do gec only produce their version in carbons teel? I would rather have the carbon steel version but I wouldn't rule out stainless.

You might watch the 'auction site' for new (or 'as new') knives. The Sod Buster style is usually one that people either will really like, or they won't. So, it's pretty easy to find new-condition knives that were bought and then flipped quickly. Many of them can be had at prices much, much lower than typical retail. That's how I acquired my large stainless Case soddie (2138 SS), which cost me all of $13 in brand new condition (I was the first and only bidder). Can't beat that. :)

How much are you looking at spending? If you wanna spend $50, then the GEC is in your price range but if you wanna spend around $25 you can have a Case Sodbuster Jr. Both have blades around 3 in. Or you can go super cheap and get a Brown Mule... which may not be pretty but sure is a good work knife fro the price (IMO).
