Recommend me a tiny slipjoint!

My cousin was standing in line to board an aircraft when they stopped him because he had a Army P-38 can opener that I gave him that I carried in Vietnam.Good thing I was there saying goodbye. because he just passed it on to me. They told him to pitch it in the garbage or not board. I think they would frown on a knife.
That is what is tricky with the rambler :)
It is so convenient that it is my true Everyday-EDC :) and I have to really pay attention to remove it before I take the plane

I would suggest a small SAK like the Small Tinker or Cadet. As mentioned, a Case Peanut would work very well. I would add a Leatherman Ps4 Squirt (or Style PS with no blade) that has a tiny blade on it for those odds and end jobs that come up that don't require a lot of tools. I believe the standard sized SAKs like the Tinker or Electrician have a blade under 2.8". There are a lot of choices and depends if you want to carry in your pocket or keep in a bag.

I have been carrying the little Condor Compact Kephart for the last week on my belt in addition to the Small Tinker in my watch pocket. It is made in 1095 and has a 2.57" blade and walnut handle. It sharpened up really easy and so far I am very pleased with it. Just depends on what you like and are used to. I am finding that it is much easier to "get to" as compared to the little SAK in my watch pocket.

The beauty of SAKs is they cut well; nobody pays any attention to them as a "knife"; they sharpen easy; there are lots of choices on tools and sizes. To top it off, if it was stolen, it would not be the end of the world and you can probably buy them there if need be.

Get a Rough Rider miniature toothpick for next to nothing. Sharp as the dickens, and meets your requirements. If it gets gone, no problem.

For folding knives, the blade needs to be shorter than 8 cm (3.14 inch).
Locking is fine.
But you actually should not carry it because a few other laws and regulations prohibit carry of any harmful objects very vaguely.
I watched TV news the other day, and they say that a number of arrested visitors for unlawful carry of knives has been increasing lately.

If you still want to carry a knife in Japan, just do not take it out in the public at all.

Here's the best advise from someone who actually lives there!

As someone who lives in a non-knife friendly country, I say SAK. The small models from Victorinox will probably be OK all over the world, and by small, I mean the classic, rambler, minichamp etc. The Minichamp also comes in Alox, and I love mine.

I’ll recommend a Fayette Jack first, just because it’s my favorite/most carried small slipjoint.

I know they’re not the easiest knife to find on the secondary market so my next recommendation would be a Case Swayback Gent(or Jack).

So on a vacation, what do you envision using the knife for? On vacation to me means the occasional opening of bottles, slicing something, thread trimming, possibly snipping at a wild hair to two, opening store packaging..... easy stuff that just about any SAK with a scissors will do even if you don't carry a SAK routinely. It is about function, not looks or stretching the limits of legality just to carry a knife. Self defense.... forget it.

How about one of the smaller Opinels? A #4 seems like it would fit the bill nicely and if it gets taken you're out like $15

SAK or Alox Mini Champ..sorted! REALLY FORGET EVERYTHING ELSE! You got a caplifter for your beers. And a compliant sized knife. Something to clean your dirty nails. You're good!

Wait, when did Victorinox start putting wharncliffes on SAKs and how have i not found this out until now!?

Like a pencil or pen ? Some of those metal chopsticks some dudes carry could do some damage.

What a revoltin' development :(
Especially in the land of superior cutting tools which Japan most certainly is.
What would the Samurai say ?
I suppose only they were allowed to carry a knife back then . . .
now I'm depressed . . .

Go directly to Seki City and just buy one there on their recommendation
What the heck . . . while there just buy a freekin' Shinogi-Zukuri katana and carry it like a big O' dog. If you are going to get the third degree might as well have something worth talking about.

I know.
It is ridiculous.
I heard a guy busted for carrying a tactical pen.
LEO can decide whether it is OK or not at the site.
No wonder why no one carries Higonokami anymore and it is going to extinct.
