Recommend me my first big Becker

The sheath is nothing fancy, but it is also completely serviceable as it is right now.

So, I'm ok with it, would appreciate something better from the factory, but am not so displeased with it that I want to replace it at this point (and I've had it for a year).

YMMV, but I'd grab it and see how you like it before spending the cash on an aftermarket sheath.

I've heard others say this... but it has not been my experience at all. Perhaps for smaller wood working tasks like limbing or shaving the bark of. I don't find the BK4 as well as the BK9 at all... It also doesn't chop as well. The BK4 is comfortable for sure, I just didn't see the performance out of it that I was hoping for.

Of course, that could all have to do with the areas we use the blades in and our techniques. I think I would really like a Machax that was about 50% larger.

I was initially very surprised when I got the 4, I wasn't expecting it to be smaller than the 9. As far as brute force blade, the 9 wins, for sure. However, the 4 is more subtle, you have to get the snap-cut technique down, and know where the sweet spot is on the Machax (and keep it sharp). Once you have these techniques developed, you can do things with the 4 just about as well as with the 9, plus the blade is smaller/lighter. I'd rather use the 4 for light carving stuff as well. The 4 just feels so comfortable in the hand, all the angles are right. As Ethan says, it truly is an extension of your arm.

Both are great blades, I just carry my 4 more often for these reasons.

Well as always it looks like I'm just going to have to get the whole lineup :D I'll probably end up getting the king because I haven't picked up a "noif" (dundee reference) in a while. I'm still really into the brute, wasn't there chatter about a production model coming out late next year?
