Recommendation : folder for outdoor use

Pm2 and a Vic Farmer
Or
Full Size Griptilian and a Vic Farmer
Or
A BK14 and a Vic Farmer

Folder for outdoor use?

Vic Tinker/Pioneer/Soldier, or pretty much any 4-blade "camper" pattern. There's a reason these have been popular for just such purposes for more than 100 years. There are 5-blade variants (SAK Farmer, Remington R-4) and many people do just fine with the wee Vic Classic all by itself.

Pick a Tinker or Pioneer, take it on a trip, give it workout. Iterate on the results.

A single-blade folder (such as many, many modern designs are) will help with some trip chores, but the multiblade knives will have more utility in general, and if you throw in a small mutli-tool (Leatherman Micra or one of the Squirt models), you'll be totally tooled.

But bring the modern thing if you like it — it's your trip, your gear.

I recently got a Spyderco Wolfspyder from UK - Ray Mears.

Wow , although it may look like a weird child , it fits the hand just fine.

A 3" blade , scandi grind , locker , no thumbstud.
It is not too wide in the pocket.
I also have a PM2 , and it was my EDC until now.

Try one !!

The large, locking SAK's are generally great for woods use. Look for a Trekker, Hunter, Ranger, or Trailmaster:

The folding saw is probably the single most useful tools you can have in the woods.

Absolutely, with a little bit of knowledge you can build traps, poles for shelter, ect, ect. The Vic Farmer has been so useful with all it has and the awl is top notch too. A high quaility knife for such a low cost. I gifted both my nephews each one but I'm not sure they understand what a great knife it is. They live in Calif. and I rarely can talk to them because they are so busy working and going to school.

. . . have you ever noticed the guys who don't go "outside" without an umbrella, galoshes and an over coat (and that is just to walk through the parking garage) (up to this point that's me) tend to INSIST on having stainless steel and the guys who think nothing of walking off into the woods with nothing more than their dog and their knife for a few happy days of relaxation tend to INSIST on a plain carbon steel blade that can rust before they knocked the morning dew off their boots ?

No...Can't say that I have ever seen that. In fact the opposite. It seems that the people who INSIST on stainless are the ones more concerned with having a few days of relaxation in the woods than concerned with futzing a carbon steel blade in damp conditions. The former is "woods junkie" stuff. The latter is "knife junkie" stuff. In my opinion.

That said, like many others...I agree that the Vic Farmer and some skills makes a perfect combination.
