Recommendation for a cop production folder?

I'm aware of what is out there as far as dedicated prying tools go such as the CopTool and the Breacher Bar from County Comm, but I need a recommendation for an EDC production folder that will stand up to the abuse of light prying, scraping and prying on locks. I've got a BM TSEK that I've had for a number of years now and have enough of an emotional attachment to it that I don't want to abuse it with day-to-day cop stuff.

I'm looking to spend around $55, and need a knife that has strong enough blade geometry, strong enough steel, and a strong enough lock to resist tip-snapping, bending and closing unexpectedly. My price point was set by what I feel comfortable using in a situation that may damage the knife, but I'm willing to go up some if I can find a knife that meets my needs well.

I've looked so far at the Kershaw Junkyard Dog II, the BM Griptilian in the modified sheepsfoot variant, and briefly at a CRKT M16 offering in a spear-point.

Does anyone who has one of these knives think it's sufficient for the task, or are there better options?

for around 50 bucks is hard, just because you really don't get into your better blade material. I always stay around 100 bucks, for that I would recommend the mini or full size Doug Ritter found at AeroMedix .com. Also the Caly 3 by spyderco regular not the carbon fiber. The mini presidio by benchmade is also very good. good luck .Also a sight called Peter Atwood make incredible pry tools also, hard to get, first come first serve.

Those offering fixed-blade suggestions may not know that department policies can be very precise--like mine, which says it's got to be a folder, and it's got to have a blade under 4". And the Sheriff (or his representatives in the command structure) have veto power, which means it had best not look too scary.

Given those restrictions, what I carry on duty is either a Griptillian in good old 440c or a Spyderco Endura. I think they do about an equally good job of the cutting duties I might encounter, and they both have a sturdy enough blade geometry that I don't have to fret about them. In private life I carry a Stretch II in zdp189 and carbon fiber; but that's a little pricey and a little fragile (thin, flat-ground blade) to be using as a scraping/prying/whatever tool. On duty, I carry a Leatherman Charge on my belt, along with the knife in my pocket. Having a real tool along is usually the best protection IME against the ravages of using a knife as something it's not.

Teufelhunden, welcome to Bladeforums.

I recently got a small knife that should do the job as a beater, the Benchmade Ally. It's all coated metal, very short and slim, tucks in anywhere.

I had a CRKT M-16 lock fail on me with medium duty. I was wearing gloves at the time so no cuts. I got rid of all my CRKT knives after that (except a small P.E.C.K.). I also had a Point Guard Minor fall apart on me from CRKT. I don't think much of them.

Kershaw is only a little better IMHO. I would stick with Spyderco or Benchmade.

Spyderco has a few that may be near your price range. The D'allera drop point is a fine knife that is a very strong. I think that you can still find them for about $60. Another one is the ATR. These can be found for about $75 if you look around. You might find a used one for less. They are very strong as well. The Endura 4 is also a strong knife but is lighter. Those would be where I started with Spyderco.

Other than the Griptilian, I am not sure which BM would work as I am only really interested in the Osborne BMs.

Save yourself a bunch of trouble down the road and get a decent knife, but also get a mini-prybar.

Another excellent suggestion--I carry one on my keychain so that when I don't have the multitool to protect my knife, I still won't be tempted to use my blade to remove staples and pull nails and whatever other fiendish and fool ideas I might come up with.

You might want to take a look at one of the new CRKT Stubby Razels. I've heard they will be selling in the sell in the $50-$60 dollar range.

You might also check out the 5.11 series. New Graham has 'em at very good prices.

hi,

the correct german word for your nick is "Teufelshund" but this word isn't in usual use, you would say "Höllenhund" (means Hellsdog) :D

THose Razels look like they might be the ticket. I was hoping for a folder, and have even toyed with the idea of taking a beater and cutting the tip off then grinding it down to a chisel point, but the fixed blade will obviously be stronger.

FYI, I do carry a mini-prybar from CountyComm that I find incredibly useful, but a lot of times, I need a knife in addition to that to get through a door (one holds mechanism, one prys open).

Ben, I appreciate the heads up correction about the name. It might not be correct German, but I earned it as it's spelled ;)

Buy a Spyderco Native from Wal-Mart for $40.00 and a small prybar from somewhere like countycomm.com You're in under $50.00.
