Recommendation for a cop production folder?

The mini-prybars are a great idea..but chances are, they will not be on you when you need them, they will be in your man bag in the passenger seat of the patrol car.

Myself, I carry three knives on duty normally. I carry a BM Griptillian weak-side front pocket, and this is the knife that gets 95% of the use. I also carry a 5.11 Tarani Karambit strong side rear pocket..I dont use it, but its fun to play with...on my inner belt, behind my mag pouch, handle facing forward is a KaBar TDI PE. This is the knife that does the prying, etc, and is there as a last ditch.

For a general use folder, its hard to beat the Griptillian. If I had to carry only one, thats the one I would choose. I have cut, lunged, pried, and hacked at things I should not have, and the knife has survived.

If the I could not have the Grip, Id have to go with an Emerson of one sort or another.

Fairly tough, cheap, reliable locking mech, cheap, good steel and did I mention CHEAP cost? Spyderco Endura Gen. 4

What else can a cop ask for?

It's more than your budget, but I had great success (& it fit the uses you mentioned) with my old Emerson CQC7 (Unwaved '99 model). I used it for a number of years when I was in Patrol & Investigations. While I don't normally care for the chisel grind blade, it did have its uses, like you said, for light prying, scraping, etc.

With all that being said, it's hard to beat a Spyderco Native or Delica/Endura for the $.

Good luck on your choice.

I'm aware of what is out there as far as dedicated prying tools go such as the CopTool and the Breacher Bar from County Comm, but I need a recommendation for an EDC production folder that will stand up to the abuse of light prying, scraping and prying on locks. I've got a BM TSEK that I've had for a number of years now and have enough of an emotional attachment to it that I don't want to abuse it with day-to-day cop stuff.

I'm looking to spend around $55, and need a knife that has strong enough blade geometry, strong enough steel, and a strong enough lock to resist tip-snapping, bending and closing unexpectedly. My price point was set by what I feel comfortable using in a situation that may damage the knife, but I'm willing to go up some if I can find a knife that meets my needs well.

I've looked so far at the Kershaw Junkyard Dog II, the BM Griptilian in the modified sheepsfoot variant, and briefly at a CRKT M16 offering in a spear-point.

Does anyone who has one of these knives think it's sufficient for the task, or are there better options?

You could get a fixed blade Greco Gambler bowie for about a hundred bucks on e-bay.
No folder is trustworthy prying.

If you want to risk it and buy a disposable knife to abuse the CRKT M16 Tanto
point would be my pick.
Watch your fingers.

I would go ahead and add $10 bucks to you limit and get a BM 551 Grip. That was it ambidextrous, and if you cant carry it gun side. Also don't get the sheep's foot hollow ground. It has a very thin edge due to the hollow grind of the blade and may not stand up to everything you need. You may also consider getting a tanto Grip. The tanto point is great for scarping, and it’s a good strong point.

How about a SOG Pentagon Elite I for a little more than 55? I just got one on AG Russel for $80 with shipping. It has a 3.9in blade and specifically says it is designed for police work. Hope you find something that works
