Recommendation for an inexpensive, nice traditional folder?

Looks like you might've already made a decision, but I'd recommend the canoe pattern. I picked up a Buck canoe recently and am really liking the pattern, especially the spearpoint blades. Rough Rider has some interesting ones as well.

Here's an inexpensive Rough Rider, but it may get you even more dirty looks in the lunch room:

[Non-BF dealer reference removed]

They should name it the "Christmas Story".

Who's discussing non-traditional patterns? The whole thread is traditional pattern suggestions. I'm confused.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Boker yet. You can find some Solingen-made Bokers in that price range, and they are really well made for the money.

I like what you've done to the opinel. I, unfortunately have no woodworking ability. I dig the mech mod and tank combo too. I run an nzonic clone with a nimbus clone at the moment myself.

If you have a question about moderating, take it to PM, not the thread.

The Aitor is a very good choice actually. Compact and inexpensive but I think the small ones are no longer being made in Spain = time to snap them up quickly!

Thanks, Will

Sorry. I should have left that out of my photo. I took that for another forum and it turned out the opinel looked pretty good in it. My fault Frank.

I apologize as well. I only wished to acknowledge another shared interest with richstag, no intent to derail the thread.

Back on topic: As I mentioned, I'm probably going to pick up a RR, however, I think I'd also like to see what all the fuss is with the Opinels. Any suggestions as to which would best suit this particular application? I wasn't aware they had so many models...

I have an opinel no 8 carbon. It would do everything you are asking except, in my opinion, they don't look "classy". I think they look more, I dunno, hold over from 200 years ago. Now, I like it a lot, don't get me wrong, just, if you are looking for classy, the case or rough rider suggestions seem like a better fit to me. One that I am thinking about is a utica muskrat. I like the way they look, and its 1095, made in usa, and its something different. But I haven't handled one yet, so I cannot speak about their quality.

You've gotten a lot of great advice so I'll just add that you're on a slippery slope and already doomed. Just give in and get them all. You'll have them eventually anyway.

:grumpy: I'm actually about to start paring down the number of blades I have laying around and consolidating to a small handful (5-10 total blades is my plan) to fill specific niches. This is one.

Put me in the Rough Rider camp, as well. Very nice knives, with a lot of bang for the buck. If you can find a Gunstock (checkered bone) stockman pattern, I think you would be very happy.

Shiny drug store knives get the job done but that warm fuzzy feeling comes from tradition. Heres my daily partner.

Any in the Case yellow delrin line up. Stainless or CV and pattern of your choice. Best traditional knife range for the price, in my opinion.

This is a German bull. It was at the upper end of your limit, but it is a bit large for your purpose. They also make a smaller size, also stag, for a bit cheaper. The sheath was not included.
