Recommendation for first Spyderco?

ATR...

F-22,
Your initial choice is quite right and hard to challenge – both Delica and Endura are SPYDERCO classics and you can’t go wrong with either. IMO the choice should be based on intended use – I would choose Delica for urban carry and Endura if outdoors use is intended as primarily. Or get them both...

Carlos have made very valuable note about Military – another SPYDERCO classic. If you like BM AFCK it could be pretty interesting for you to try this knife.

BTW, Ti-Salsa is very nice choice for urban daily carry.

If you buy the ATR you will only end up buying the Delica or Endura later and prefering it.
The Delica and Endura are popular for a reason.

another vote for delica/endura. just really depends on if you want a big knife or a smaller one. for me the CF delica is about as perfect a knife can get for the price. but that being said...can you really get a bad spyderco?

well actually you can, your first spyderco is the absolute WORST thing you can get. cause after the first one, you need a second...then a third...then a forth...pretty soon, you are broke, homeless, and jobless. but on the bright side you have lots of shiney toys to play with. :p

"hi my name is jestyr and im a spyderco addict"

You need to hold each of them in your hand, and see which one fits you the best. That having been said, I've carried the same 50/50 Delica on and off for the past five years. Mostly on. ;) I have over twenty Spydercos in my collection and eight of those are Delicas. (Blue handle, pink handle, red trainer, olive-drab handle, carbon fiber, black PE, black SE, and black 50/50) So you can see, I have a fondness for this knife. Try it out, its one of Spyderco's top sellers for a reason.

The Delica is my very favorite knife. I used (and abused) Delica(s) for quite a long time. Only the little Calypso jr. was able to compete as EDC with the Delica.

Given a choice of Endura or Delica for EDC, I'd take the Delica. Enough blade to get most jobs done, in a light, compact package. If I was going to be doing heavy jobs on a daily basis, and had bigger pockets in my work clothes, the Endura might be better. I have fairly large, but skinny, hands, and the Delica is easy to open, close and manipulate. (The Endura is pretty ergonomic, too, but the Delica is better).

A word of warning - it would be unfair to compare a Delica to, say, a Benchmade AFCK. IMHO, a FRN Delica is as functional as an AFCK ( I have a newer D2 model). Both have strong and weak points when compared head-to-head. HOWEVER, the Delica is a ~$50 knife, while the AFCK is a ~$100 knife. If you're partial to Benchmade's construction and materials, it would be more fair to look at a higher-end, US made Spyderco that has similar features (G-10, linerlock, etc.) That said, the Delica usually gets the carry nod over my AFCK for these reasons: weight, compactness, and feel in my hands. I am losing a little bit in hard-use applications with a thinner blade (though some have argued that a thinner blade can be used harder in certain situations because it requires less force to make a cut) and somewhat weaker lock.

Good luck in your quest for the perfect Spydie!

I am not looking for a replacement for my AFCK, there never will be one :D

I just want a Spydie to add to my ever growing knife collection :)

Since I haven't seen it recommended yet, I'm going to thrown in a vote for the Cricket . Smallish, easily carried, great for up-close detail work or opening mail.

to me.... the ESSENCE of Spyderco is best captured by the Calypso Jr. There will be a special run of PE Ltwt soon. Mine replaced my M2 AFCK as EDC a couple of years ago.

I had a big thread, and there have been many other of these... first Spydie Delica or Endura ones.

If you want a 4" blade, get the Endura.

If you want a 3" blade, get the Delica. But if you want this to be a 24/7 EDC where you might have togo to "knife un-friendly places" a Delica would be much more likely to pass by then an Endura as a "tool" it is also easier to *cough*conceal*cough.

I picked up mine from NGK for $41.26 US + shipping.

look at the mouse knife. i got it to clip inside my duty belt. the blade is the legal limit size to go into the state max prison where i work but the mouse is WAY TO MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no can do.Its a very nice knife.

After having an irrational dislike of the Spydies look (because of the large thumb hole) for some time, I took the plunge and ordered an FRN SE Delica in VG-10 which arrived today. What on earth stopped me from buying this before, I have no idea.
I am still adjusting to the one handed opening with a hole but everything about this knife is gorgeous.

My recommendation goes to the FRN Delica :D if you hadn't guessed.

Although my first Spydie was a an SS Police, I soon acquired an Endura and a Delica, the old style with the plastic clips. As soon as the newer ones with the metal clips came out, I bought them and never looked back, but they mostly sit in my drawer now. You see, I have found that a bit mor investment brings a very great improvement in Spydercos. The Native with its CPM440V blade, now S30V, is not much more than a Delica and an infinitely more attractive knife to carry and the regular Salsa is a damned fine little knife, as is the Meerkat. For the ultimate in 3" carry, try the Li'l Temperance in either point style, I prefer the spear point, but that is a matter of taste. In a bigger knife, the Military is an excellent knife, but I prefer the late, lamented StarMate. Another choice, especially if you like tanks, is the Chinook. In a somewhat less massive style are the Vesuvius and the Lum Chinese, both quite nice choices.

In any case, do enjoy your Spydie adventure.
