Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some recommendations on a good quality production single blade slipjoint. It's going to be a user, so I don't need a collectors piece, but I want quality, and will pay for it.

thanks,
caleb

I just picked up a Queen Copperhead in cocobolo. D2 steel at a great price. Nice solid knife and rides in the pocket well. You can find them at Cumberland.

I second this choice!

The Teardrop locking spearpoint is no dog either

Those are great looking knives. I especially like that bulldog jacknife pattern. Very nice... Thanks

A Case Sod Buster Jr, especially the yellow handle in CV steel is a great user. Any good teardrop single jack is another choice. Queen makes one in D2 with a liner lock. With the Queens you may have to do a good sharpening on them first, but won't have to for a long time afterwards.

If you like a long, slim blade, the Case barehead trapper is a nice one.

And I'll put in a vote for the similar Case Slimline Trapper. Nice long slim slicing blade.

How strong/thick a blade are you looking for? Locking or non?

I also think the Schatt "File & Wire" #13 C.B. Morgan Gunstock (or "Reverse Gunstock Trapper" as I've seen it listed) is very nice, but a bit more than the Case knives listed. Thicker, heavier ATS-34 blade, very nice and solid.

But there are zillions of choices out there.

Another vote for the S&M file and wire.

I have several Case Sodbuster Jr.'s from my dad and grandfather.
I also have 2 newer ones I carry. In my work bag is the black handle with SS blade. In my pocket always is a yellow handle CV Sodbuster Jr. I love the style and workman abilities it has, especially the CV version.

The Sodbuster and Copperhead are great choices, Queen also makes a single blade Trapper/Utility pattern.

How could I have forgotten? The Texas Toothpick, in any number of sizes, from any number of makers.

How about a Case Copperlock?

'Taint a slipjoint but it feels like one, and the fit and finish are excellent.

Only downside is that they don't currently offer the full sized one in CV steel. However, they do offer the mini-Copperlock in CV but only with yellow delrin handles.

In any case, it's one of my favorite patterns.

Once in a while you can find a yellow Delrin/CV Copperlock with a Wharncliff blade, too. Very cool. Here's one. No connection with the sale, etc, just pointing one out.

P.S. Don't forget Opinel, if you don't want to spend a bunch.

For a single blade user its hard to beat a sodbuster. Nice wide blade with exellent slicing geometry.

But want to have some fun?

Go get a medium size Douk-Douk and go cut up some cardboard boxes. Also get an Opinel and a Mercator.

Don't worry, all three will cost less than a Queen copperhead.

Sodbuster, baby. All the way. Simple, timeless design which is a workhorse that just won't quit. Big wide blade that allows for a razor sharp edge. Whole lotta knife for a very affodable price. Mine seems pretty sheeple friendly too, since it is not a very pointy blade, and for some reason a point scares the crap out of people. I guess they think the only way to hurt someone with a knife is to stab them, and if there is no point, then the knife must just be a work tool. Whatever, the sodbuster and sodbuster jr seem to be pretty well accepted.

I have been carrying a Case 61046 slimline trapper in cv lately. It has the dark red bone handle. I love it. Great pocket knife. Rides very well in the pocket and handles all sorts of cutting chores well. My stockmen and two blade trappers are getting jelous.;)

Vince - Where did you get that Bulldog dogleg? I haven't seen one like that before, and I really like it.

Get a Dan Burke, Queen made, Rancher. It comes with BG-42 steel, looks good and rides in your pocket fine.

I would suggest T.A. Davison, he is a maker here. He makes incredible slippies, for resonable prices!!
