Hey folks,

My hunt has been long and arduous. Im simply not finding the perfect little knife that i have in mind.

I want to get the girl friend a simple little knife to have with her. Shes mentioned that she would like one a few times. However I have a few "must haves":

-Good stainless steel (no 440 for me, thanks)
-Plain edge, no serrations (for daily use)
-Seat belt cutter
-Glass breaker

Id really like it if it didn't have much more "stuff" packed into it. Small, light and easy to carry in a purse or car.

Ive seen a few things that come close, but nothing quite right. If i cant find something just right ill get her a nice custom made folder. Budget is no real issue, i mean to a point. 200-300$ price range is fine for a rescue type knife.

Thanks for any thoughts!

I'll probably have more to say but just my thoughts, seat belt cutters seem to be mostly useless/more trouble than helpful. The few on knives I've used, anyway, other parts seem to get in the way. I wouldn't make it a priority, although far be it from me to say someone else's preference is not good.

440c is good stainless, but that's okay, we all have our preferences. ;)

The glass breaker I can't comment, never used one. I wonder how useful they are.

Get her a Benchmade Triage in orange.

I would second this... I don't use hardly any knives with any of the above features (except plain edge) so I really have almost no recs. The last knife I had that came close was a SOG Trident (seat belt cutter) that I sold some time ago.

By the OP's criteria it appears he wants a knife that will perform well as a "car rescue" device. The Triage seems suited to this, or any of the various Benchmade or Spyderco "rescue" type models.

On that note, a fully serrated rescue knife would probably be a far better choice for this type of work than a plain edge one with a seat belt cutter... They tend to make the rescue knives in that configuration for a reason. Just my two cents. Never used a rescue type or full serrated model myself.

By the way OP, looks like you've taken the "read more, post less" adage to new heights. ;)

Exactly Red, i was just hoping to see what kinda thoughts came in!

To be honest, i assumed that seat belt cutters worked and worked well... perhaps that was a bad assumption to make. Maybe ill just get her a nice folder and hope she never drives off a bridge! LOL

I think (not sure, no expert on the belt cutters) the idea behind them is to make a portion of the blade easily accessible for quick cutting and escape in a tight spot where you might have time and, er, flexibility, to retrieve and open the knife fully. So in a way it makes sense. But I think a properly sharpened plain or fully serrated edge will cut right through that stuff, honestly. And while I wouldn't carry fully serrated exclusively, it terms of sawing through seat belt stuff, it would actually be rather ideal.

Again I'm not an expert on this feature, as you'll see in a thread I created I tend to avoid them, maybe some here have good stories about them. I've just never heard a "thank goodness I opted for the seat belt cutter feature" story, yet.

By the way unless she is specifically into pink... don't get a pink knife... lotta guys make that mistake assuming it's the perfect color for a girl. ;)

But some pink knives are cool and I may own one someday. I'm super secure in my manhood. I have a pink shirt too, so what? ;)

If you're going for seat belt cutter, try to find a knife with a dedicated belt cutter like the Benchmade. Most other knives just have a slot that leads to the edge. In my mind you're better off just opening the knife and using it.

My girlfriend carries a ZT 801 in her purse... "It opens so easy!"

:)

My wife carries a Case Trapper Equestrian or Kershaw Leek depending on her plans for the day. Obviously the Equestrian is used on days she tends to our horses. The Leek is super sleek and feminine, sorry guys but it kind of is, and is perfect for a lady to carry unnoticed.

If nothing else she always has a Leatherman Style CS on her keychain.

The 915 Triage is exactly what you describe. I have one and it is a fine very functional tool. I can tell you the BM belt cutters work very well and not just in emergencies.

Just get her a really nice regular EDC knife she can carry wherever, and pick up of these to go along with it for her to keep specifically in the car just in case...

Now your choices in Knives just increased exponentially

I recommend the ResqMe. Cuts seat belt. Pierces glass—aim it at the lower corner of a door window.

Fits on a key chain. You can take it where they don’t allow knives.

I keep one in a shirt pocket. Even if I break one arm in the crash, I can reach either shirt pocket with the other.

Then get whatever knife she likes.

I'd get her the three layer SAK; Dual Pro X. It's big enough that she might be able to break glass with it. Seat belt blade and regular plain edge blade.

My snarky knife suggestion is to get the $10-$15 Gerber River knife. Got everything except the steel. But for that price, who cares? And just how much is she going to use it? Just keep it in the car ready for the unlikely event it's needed which will probably be never. I have one attached to my kayak life vest.

And then get her something for the purse, like a Delica to use for what she needs a knife for.

A spyderco Delica, in her favorite color. In my experience girls tend to like the opening hole more than the thumbstuds as they're more long nail friendly. Then get a benchmade houdini tool for the car, no sense carrying extra crap on the knife.

Like others have mentioned, I would get a separate glass breaker and cutter tool for her. I bought my wife a pink Spyderco Squeak back when we were just dating and she absolutely loved it. She carried it almost every day for years, and even had it in her garter during our wedding :D
This might sound weird but check the depth of the pockets of the jeans she usually wears. Girl jeans seem to have really shallow pockets that can't fit alot. I was going to get my wife a mini-grip last week, but after trying out one of my Benchmades with similar dimensions it just didn't work out in her pockets. For most girls- smaller and lighter is better.

^^^Read that for sure about the pockets. My wife has some pockets that I have no idea what you could put in them. If she's carrying it in a purse or car pants won't matter. But you might want to get her something that she could carry and be handy which would have to be on the thin side and light, probably. If you do outdoorsy things, she may want to carry it in a pocket. Think about clips also.

This is everything you need right here.. My wife owned one in purple and I sold it here on the Exchange because it was too long to fit in her girly sized pockets. Darn it..
But it does have the Glass Breaker that you requested and the knife blade also doubles as a seat belt cutter. ;)
I also highly recommend buying from Dave at thehollowgrind.com. Great guy and great service; also a member here at BF.
