Im a cheap bastard (actually a student with 30 bux pocket change).

Got myself

a Glock M81 field knife (28 bux , LOL , got it for the novelty and airsoft photo shoots)

a 3 dollar fruit knife , stainless , useful as a use a few times and toss away piece.

and a Superknife ! (the irony , but its darn useful for opening snacks )

do recommend me something that i might find useful.

currently eyeing the Victorinox Trekker german army model.

Fixed blade or folders apply , preferably pocket/belt carry.

uses:

cut stuff.

self defence .

showoff.

easy maintanance.

environment :

damp, hot as hell in summer (35 deg C.) falls to 10-15 in winter , near sealine.

anything nice within that price range?

Im usually a Benchmade man, but for that price I think that a Kershaw Leek would fit the bill, mainly because the assisted opening is cool. Others, in no particular order:

H&K (Benchmade) 14300S
Spyderco Tenacious
Buck Vantage-AVID (or Pro +$10)
Ontario Rat Folder
Cold Steel Voyager
Kershaw Ken Onion Storm
Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter

and the list goes on. The common thread is to find a decent brand and you should be ok - Kershaw, Benchmade, Spyderco, Ka-Bar, etc. I can't recommend Gerber, Winchester, Remington, or SOG (at this price level). Good luck.

did a bit of research on the following knives STB recommended,

most are AUS 8A material blades.

might look into that areas and man, most are folders !

Im in Taiwan and blades aint cheap , the problem with avaliability comes in too.

Will post a few of the knives within the price range later and ask for comments.

CRKT Drifter ? Sure it ain't self defense knife, but its damn good knife for $17 and Stainless version has framelock. Its about size of my Victorinox Soldier Alox open and closed pretty identical to that Victorinox size too.

the spyderco tenacious and kershaw skyline sell for about 30$ in the u.s, and imo are well worth twice that much. my skyline is my favorite edc.

I recently got a Gerber small folder with F.A.S.T technology -- spring assisted. Very well made and very strong with a good locking mechanism. Only has a 2" blade, but very pocketable (clip) and legal everywhere. Good all around knife and probably good for self-defense, but haven't tried the latter yet.

I've had a lot of Swiss Army knives, and they are very handy, but as for the blade they don't hold an edge like others. I do miss the toothpick, however. :)

Kershaw Mini Cyclone. Presently on Sale at Knife Center for $29.00. I just got one of these about a week ago and cannot believe how much knife this is for that amount. Takes a razor edge, tough, and looks good too.

Hey man,

I just graduated from school so i know where you are coming from. the knives that i own and really like are:

Spyderco Tenacious ~40
SOG Flash 2 ~40
Kershaw Leek ~40
Bladetech ganyana lite ~30
Kershaw Skyline ~30

I think that the tenacious and the flash 2 are my favorites out of that lot because i like their size. you can look up the specs on them but the tenacious is roughly 3.25 inches and built like a tank, basically indistructible. email me and i can tell you some stories about that knife. The flash 2 is 3.5 inches and a cool looking very light weight knife that is an assisted opener. both are full flat ground and in AUS 8 and the chinese equivilent. I have put some serious abuse on those knives and they have held up very well. You cant really go wrong with either of those knives...Dont believe alot of the negative vibes towards SOG on here they are a good company and make affordable knives that are pretty good.

The other knives that i am currently considering(in this price range atleast) are:

SOG field pup (fixed blade) ~40
Spydie Persistence ~30
a few of the kershaws(i dont feel like looking them up with thier prices) Zing, OD1, RAM, and some more...

Those are the ones that i can think of off the top of my head, but basically as was said above as long as you get the knife from a reputable company you cant really go wrong.

feel free to drop me an email and i can help ya out i have handled alot of the knives in this price range and can give a decent impression on them. plus i have been lurking on here for a while now. hit me up.

if i were you though, i would avoid showing knives to sheeple unless you know them well and so on and so forth. and definatly dont wave them around in class...not a good idea even in the deep south where i went to school.

as for ease of maintence, these all will require a set of hex drivers and mini torxs. also a cheapo can of Remoil will be your best friend because AUS 8 and its equals will rust on you pretty quickly if your not careful. you can get it at walmart for like 3 bucks...get some.

EDIT: you might have to travel a little farther then i did to get to walmart...ya my bad.

Tenacious or Persistence hands down. Nothing out there offers a better value in folders today.

If you see a Moki 920 (Zephyr), then buy it. I bought one in mint condition here with my last $15. It is easily the best fitted knife I have ever seen in that price range.

Actually, it's one of the best fitted knives I have seen, period. No rattle or play whatsoever. A look at the spine makes it clear; the blade and locking bar are perfectly (and I mean perfectly) flush with the handle. The grip is very secure, though the pictures don't show it.

If I had 30 dollars, I'd use it to pay next day shipping fees on a nice knife.

Trying to avoid deal spotting, but currently the online retailer named after a river has a great sale, Vic Tinker and Vic Classic together for half your budget.

Then I'd be tempted to look for something like a Mora 760, 860 or one of the new Craftline Allarounds.
