As a sidenote: don't visibly carry knives on your belt for EDC, especially as a student. Unless, of course, you're asking for total alienation. Guaranteed, having a knife on the belt is warranting unnecessary attention.

So get a folder or a pocketable fixed blade. If you double the 30, you can get an Emerson La Griffe.

Knife already mentioned but at $30 you'd find the Ka-Bar Dozier folders hard to beat. You might also want to look at the BuckLites and Gerber Ez-Outs

for a fixed blade -I agree, great option. If you have added shipping costs it wont hurt -you can get a really nice Mora for less than 20 bucks.
