Recommendation on a Swiss Army knife please

I carried a Tinker every day for a few years. I found it to be a good compromise between being easy to carry in the pocket and yet having a few key tools.

I agree use the tool finder on the Victorinox website...Its actually pretty cool and you might find some tools you didn't know they had..CD

Wow! See, now I knew if I threw that request out there I would be rewarded with tons of experience and ideas! I really appreciate everyones input. I thank you all very much. It looks like I've got some shopping to do.

J Buck, take a look at the spartan, tinker, cadet and fisherman. Something there sure to fit your needs.

I wish they still made the Victorinox Scientist. That was the perfect SAK for my needs. Nice and slim with just two layers of tools, the scientist was perfect for pocket carry. With the philips screwdriver placed on the top of the knife, the magnifying glass (fire starter), large blade, can opener, and bottle opener, the Scientist easily took care of my edc needs. I just wish SAK blades came in 1095.

A used Scientist does not sell for cheap these days, and they are increasingly hard to find. I've seen them sell for between 70 and 215 dollars on the 'bay. You are probably better offer picking up a much less expensive tinker or hiker. If you really wanted a Scientist, but you don't want to pay a premium for one, you could get a Vic Compact and an Explorer, and then modify your own Scientist out of the two (or have someone else do it for you).

I love SAKs but I tend to get carried away with the allure of the bigger more tools models. Then they sit in a drawer because they are too bulky to carry. Make sure you go minimalist so it spends more time in your pocket than on your dresser.

Good point from akadave2.

My Victorinox Mauser Officers Knife is one of my oldest EDC's - Very sturdy and solid. Clip-point and Spear-point blades, saw, combination tool/screwdriver, saw (with guard), corkscrew, and awl. I also carry a Micra for the scissors.

I'd recommend a Victorinox Mechanic. All the tools you'll ever need in a nice compact package. Have carried one for years.

I go overboard with my SAK's too, and regularly carry a Huntsman or even Swiss Champ on my belt. Yeah, they're big, but I've never wanted for tools! :D
For pocket carry I love my Wenger Standard Issue but that doesn't really fit the OP's bill. Good luck and happy shopping!

Thanks again for all your suggestions. I'm leaning toward the tinker, but will need to coon-finger a few and see how they may ride in my pocket. Weekend coming up, may have to ride into town and see what they feel like. :)

Before you go coon fingering it, be aware that there are two tinkers. Large and small. The large one is the standard 91mm frame ( 3 1/2 inch closed length) and the small tinker that is 3 1/4 closed. It's the same size as a recruit, but with the back tools like awl and phillips driver. The small tinker is just a wee bit more compact, but gives you the same tools and a blade that is just a hair shorter. It makes a difference in some cities. Either one is good, but handle each, they do feel a little different. Give it a good chicken eying as well.

Carl.
