I currently have a Gregory Dru for my main backpack but as I get older I am loking for something a little more light weight. Does anyone have a Osprey Atmos back and could you recommend it?
no atmos. I had an epic, and loved it so much I recently bought another I saw on the exchange. Osprey packs are awesome. Very well made, and comfy.
I ordered an oakley pack too recently, It came, I liked the quality, but the setup just didnt work for me, so I returned it, and bought another osprey:thumbup:
Maybe a 40 liter Stratos would work well for you.....with it's compression wings I have never had issues carrying various sized loads. Also, the backpanel that it has is the most comfy I have ever used.
I had an atmos for awhile. Good for up to 30 lbs IMHO, after that, frame feels "squishy" for lack of a better term. For light loads, I think it is a great pack, but for a "bring the kitchen sink" guy like me, it just didn't do it.
I've got a Stratos 24. It's ACE. Light, stays off your back. Good airflow and capacity. Water reservoir compatable. Comes in different sizes. Osprey has a peculiar story. California guy now living in Vietnam with his family (where they make them). There are a lot of good packs out there. Get one that fits!
I just dealt with this issue about 2 weeks ago. I went to Summit Hut looking to get information on an Atmos 65. I talked to one of the employees who was VERY into hiking (45+ hikes/year with a pack) and she actually said that it would not be a great choice for what I was needing. IIRC, she said the issues were the features and weight (I think???).
I looked at Gregory, GoLite, and a few other Osprey packs and ultimately settled on an Osprey Aether 70. I love it. And I will echo what someone else already said--it has a very comfortable back panel. I easily preferred it to every other pack I tried on.
I have an Aether 60 and a Stratos 24. Both great packs, and depending on how much I need to pack makes the decision on which to use. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either. I tried an Atmos, the fit was to small for me so I sent it back and got the Stratos. Great packs!
I went to look at osprey packs today and was pretty impressed. My current pack is a jansport cascade 70 which i belive to be around 4,300 to 4,500 cubic inches. I'm looking to go a bit smaller and lighter on the pack and i have a local outdoors shop that carries almost all of the osprey line. I went there to check out packs in the 50 to 65 litres range. I really liked the kestrel but i was thinking it was a bit small for my equipment. The atmos 65 looked about the size i might be looking for, and felt ok but it's not much smaller that my current pack. The aether series was too much like my old pack as far as the way it felt, too tall and uncomfortable. I was hoping to get my gear down small and light enough to move into a kestrel 48 but i think thats a bit optimistic at this point. Trying to determine is it's easier to lighten up a bit more and maybe ditch some odds and ends to have a much smaller pack, or just find a better riding pack only a little smaller than my current one. I'd expect the answer to be lighten up and carry less. However, with limited funds i'm not sure if i should go with a nicer pack, or keep using the old pack and move into better (lighter) gear first and get the pack later.
