Recommendation: Wetterlings vs Council Tool

I received my CT Velvicut today and wanted to get opinions on two issues and comment on one. Overall, it looks and feels great and I have no doubt it will be highly functional for the applications I'm looking to use it for. I'm going camping this weekend and will have a chance to put it through its paces, really looking forward to using it and will post in the reviews section after.

That being said (and I'm nowhere near an axe expert), the grain on the handle was slightly skewed and seemed to have 50% heartwood. The grain didn't bother me so much but I didn't know how the heartwood effects the handles.

The second was that there was some cracking around the wedge and is that something I should be concerned about?

My comment was that it was promo'ed as being hand finished to "razor sharp". It can barely cut paper. Not a problem as I'm fine sharpening it, just expected a bit more for the price.

It depends on who you ask. The Forest Service couldn't find a difference between heartwood and sapwood.

Slightly skewed off vertical isn't an issue either. I consider 45° or less OK and 20° or less to be very good. A grain which 'runs out' in the haft is always a problem.
