Recommendations for a medium woods knife?

People have actually broken (good) axe heads in cold enough weather, and axes (in general) are tougher than knives because they are thicker, and they don't need the same degree of edge retention. I've studied steel a bit (I know the difference between pearlite, bainite, and tempered martensite) and quite frankly I'm amazed that knives can be as tough and sharp as they are. The one thing that I know is that there is always some level of compromise in a blade. A machete is tough, but wont hold an edge worth a darn, my Wustoff chefs knife cuts like a razor and hardly ever needs a "real" sharpening, but I bet I could snap it with little effort. A good survival knife is a jack of all trades, but they do have their limitations.

More about my intended use... 95% of the time, I expect to be using the knife above 32 degrees F. At the extreme, I'd like a knife that can handle some punishment down to about 0 degrees F. I know that any knife can be broken, but I also do not abuse my knives (and I have never been in a survival situation that required me to abuse a knife to get something done). Still, I want a knife that can take some abuse.

*ETA: I guess, since I don't abuse my knives, my explanations of what I am seeking are all a little vague.
