I have recently been considering a beefy, large (3;7 inch or longer blade) folder with a tanto or modified tanto blade. Looking for a stout, thumb stud or waved folder with a price range, new or used, of about $150.00 Any recommendations? The only thing I would not like is a CS Voyager due to not liking what I think of as plastic feeling scales.

Thanks very much.

If you don't like the Voyager scales, get a Recon 1, which has G10 scales.

Didn't realize the Recon 1 came in a Tanto. WIll check it out.

This is a limited edition with OD green handles, in the new XHP steel, $109 at BladeHQ:

If you want the plain black handled version it will save you $5.

Hogue makes 2 blade sizes and 4 different handles. Have a look.

ZT 0700. Its discontinued and you can find them between $90-150. You can open it via the thumb studs, or flipper.

I don't own one, but a ZT 0620 would match your description for a wave opened tanto. I have seen the Elmax version for around $150 used.

Get a CQC7B. It's not just everything you need, it's a classic.

gotta agree with charlie mike with one caveat: super cqc-7. try sooner state knives very close on your price point

ZT 0550 is practically indestructible. Can't remember the exact blade length off hand but it's a good size and plenty thick although it's not a tanto.

Cold steel code 4 with tanto blade cts xhp. Only 3.5 inch blade but great edc if that's what you want for. Below your price range to.

You were describing the Bad Monkey until you got to the budget. Only an extra hundred...:devilish:

I was in the market for these exact specifications last month, I was looking around your price range as well, but when I saw the Southern Grind Bad Monkey Tanto, spending the extra hundred was absolutely worth it. The fit and finish is top notch, perfect lockup, perfectly centered and zero blade play. The small sharpened swedge it has is killer, I haven't seen any other blade like it.

My first choice would be CQC-7 but if you can't find it for what your budget calls (I got mine for $130, new, from a forum member's site), you can put together your custom BM Griptilian on BM website, it'll cost you around or less than $150
I'd say Voyager, but you don't like the handle... It's solid and unbreakable almost as the Griptilian. CRKT also have few tanto models that are solid.

Almost forgot: Utilitac. They have great tanto models with coffin or round pommel handles, inexpensive but very good budget knives.

The only tanto folder I have is a hk soldat in n680 steel some would call it cheap at around 50 bucks
I like it it's not nearly as nice as a let's say zt or anything but it's okay

You may be able to get a ZT 0620 for that price although brand new it's $200. Very robust folder with thumb disc and Emerson Wave opening. 3.6" tanto blade.
