Recommendations for a utilitarian folder.

I also own both a 550SBT and a 551BTGY, and I can testify that the Griptilians are worth much more than they cost. They are incredibly nice knives.

Have you considered a small fixed blade, maybe a neck knife?
I am an avid sport fisherman and I have used the Fallkniven WM-1 around the neck the latest two years.
I find it ideal. You can manouver the blade at all times with one hand even if you wear wader trousers. Easy to clean and strong enough for an emergency situation.
You mentioned you lost a knife jogging. Will not happen with this solution. I also wear the WM1 when wearing shorts.

I want to thank all of the members for their replies. I needed a knife pretty quick (I really miss having one around the house, feel kinda naked if you know what I mean) so I went to my local gun shop and looked at what they had. I only saw four that really caught my attention: a Strider (freakin' huge), a Spyderco Civilian, a Spyderco Police, and a Benchmade AFCK. Since I needed the knife pretty quick, I bought the AFCK. And I have to admit, I really like it now. The axis locking mechanism felt weird for the first half hour or so but I got used to it by now. The blade is made of D2 steel however if it matters much. I think the advantages will outweigh any negatives.

My only complaint is the handle. It's made of that G10 plastic thing I think (correct me if I'm wrong). But the edges are sharp and not contoured or rounded. Still, it does feel pretty good when I hold it. The blade does have some kind of black coating on it too. I'm gonna go to Benchmade's site and see what the coating is. The last problem is now I'm going to have to buy a Military and see if it's better or not:D

Thanks again guys!

Martin, I'm just curious...is it difficult to re-sheath your knife with one hand?
I've never used a neck-knife so this might sound stupid:
To me, the idea of trying to sheath a neck-knife with one hand while standing in a moving boat sounds precarious at best (as in pointing a sharp blade toward your own neck).

I think the Military or the AFCK would be fine choices.
I'll give the nod to the Military for ease of cleaning.

Here are some other knives that you might want to consider. They don't have the Spyderco thumb-hole but they do have a "flipper":

Kershaw/Ken Onion speed-safe knives
CRKT Carson M-16 and M-18 series
CRKT Lightfoot M1

Good luck,
Allen.

I used to use a Cold Steel Bird&Trout knife, which came with a neck sheath. The neck sheath put the knife a nice handy spot, but it was a pain to resheath. I've used a ton of different knives for fishing, and now use tactical folders almost exclusively, although there are some fixed blade vertical belt sheaths that work reasonably well.

just grab a small file & you can round the edges of the G10 yourself, that makes the AFCK feel much nicer in the hand.

Congratulations on buying an 806D2. The black coating is BMs BT coating, it is just their Teflon that they put on blades to protect them. The Teflon might wear off with use, but that just shows how much you use it. Even if the Teflon wears off in an area, the blade is still protected from rust at the molecular level.

Be very careful if you do this, as the G10 is partially made of glass, much like fiberglass or insulation. You MUST wear a cover over your mouth and nose and do this in a well ventilated area, as a way to prevent from breathing in glass particles.

Allen:
With a small neck knife like the WM I can resheath it with one hand.
Thumb on the top of the sheath and finger on the guard.
If you are fishing mainly on a boat i guess a folder with a neck sheath could be a good alternative.
My main reasons for a small fixed blade is ease of cleaning and easier to manouver with cold fingers.
Also if you are ice fishing a neck knife is a good life insurence to use ase an ice pick.

My thoughts exactly. Just go slow, and when you get close, maybe revert to sandpaper and go slower to get the edges nice and smooth. And don't breath the dust.

The black coating is, I think, a Teflon based coating. It scratches/abrades off easily in use (e.g., if you stab the knife and cut, say, into drywall, or into dirt, you'll abrade the coating off). Benchmade puts black on steels that have a tendency to rust, e.g. D2 and M2. You may also notice, once you do abrade the finish off, that BM foregoes a finishing step when they black coat, since it fills in machine tool marks. My 710HS and 800HS are both this way.
