I am looking for a nice fixed blade knife. We do some camping. Need a fixed blade knife strong enough to cut wood, vines, rope etc. Recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Chopper? if so then take a look at the RTak II. chops, batons, and carves better than my bk9.
If youre not looking for a chopper then look at the Tops Baja 4.5

Or go custom. Take a look at JK Knives.
His subforum is linked in my sig.

Becker. Pick the one that appeals to you, I really like my BK15 for an all around hiking type knife (not too heavy). Car camping have some fun, get an Ontario Marine Raider Bowie. I giggle every time I pick mine up.

For general camping/hiking, $20~$30 will get you very good fixed blades ...

Mora Companion HD (4") or Bushcraft (4.25")

Marttiini Hunter (4") or Big Game Hunter (5")

Or, for $70, step up to the Kabar BK16 (4.4")

BUT ... my fav is the Kabar BK15 (5.5") and the BEST value at $50 shipped on the Exchange - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1346068-Becker-BK7-BK5-BK15-All-NIB

I love my 15!
...and 5 ...and 4 ...and 24 ...and 11 ...and so on.

You can't go wrong with a Becker.

After about 40 years of searching for the perfect all around camp knife/utility knife I believe that I've finally found it - at least the one that does it for me: L.T. Wright Genesis in Full Flat Grind. The more I use it, the more genius I see in both the design and it's execution. However, it is a knife that is designed to be a precise cutting/slicing tool, not a substitute for a hand axe.

If you are the kinda guy who feels the need to beat the crap out of your knives, my first recommendation would be a Bark River Bravo 1.5....

My recommendation, use the search feature, search for things like "camp knife" or "bushcraft knife", or even just scroll through the pages, as this topic as been hashed out at least 3 times already just in November alone. At least a few times every month.

I'm Not trying to be a D!@# but, you'll get a ton of good IMMEDIATE recommendations off those other threads which were looking for the same thing, and you won't have to wait around checking this thread day after day just to see the same people post the exact same suggestions here as the did there... It's not like there is a new super duper better then all the rest steel and/or camp knife that just came out today so, any suggestion you find within the last year or two (or 5) is as relevant today for the most part as it was then.

Agreed that the forums has a lot of good info about the camp knife question already, good info. My opinion only, get a good fixed blade, smaller pocket knife like a SA and then a small hatchet for heavier chopping. I have always liked the idea behind the Nessmuk trio, three essential tools you would need to accomplish camp tasks, and the three tools would be up to you (saw instead of ax, etc). I am now appreciating the feel of my LT Wright Buscrafter HC.

Depends on your budget of course.

Great suggestions with the Beckers, also would throw BRKT Bravo 1.25 or 1.5 into the mix. They are simply awesome.
