Recommendations for components: inexpensive mini survival kits

I keep a cheap credit card knife in my wallet. Costs about a dollar, has a decently sharp blade, card folds into a handle. Weighs next to nothing. Very inexpensive plastic "survival" ponchos don't take up much room, certainly less than a 55 gallon trash bag. They cost $1 to $3. And can cover a person head to foot when seated. I have waited out rain showers wearing them in my canoe and in a shelterless camp. With care, they can be used to construct the roof of a small shelter.

The bandage that is most useful for more different things is the triangular bandage. Tying an arm sling, tying a compression bandage, tying a splint on a broken bone, tying a tourniquet, tying on your head to ward off sunburn. That sounds bulky but…

You know the boxed first aid kits you find on industrial sites? Lots of individual items in boxes that fit compactly into a bigger box? Find a place that sells refills for those boxed kits.

Here’s one source, which I have not used. I include it just as an example. http://www.first-aid-product.com/industrial/unitized-bandages-2.html

Scroll down and you can find a boxed triangular bandage for $1.42. You can afford to get one for each kit, plus a few for practice.

Note: The Cinch Tight bandage is even more versatile. Our soldiers carry it in the sand box. But I judge it too expensive for this kind of kit.
