Recommendations for good all around fixed blade knife...

Agree. I was looking for something smaller. I have 6" and 7" blades of very good steel, but I wanted something a tad smaller for ~EDC.

Dollar for dollar ,pound for pound, it would be very hard to
find a better all 'round knife than either the Buck Nighthawk

Unfortunately the Buck Nighthawk was one of the dullest knives out of the box I ever had - it really had an obtuse edge - mainly because the blade was so thick behind the edge bevel.

I was really disappointed with the knife - because Buck used to have very sharp fixed blades with basically rolled/convex edges - up to maybe the 1990's - then they went to a more conventional bevel - and the Nighthawk was - well just disappointing.

It looks great, nice design and balance - but boy was it UNsharp - took me a few HOURS to radically re-sharpen the thing - I gave it a semi-convex edge and checked and finished on crock-sticks to get the precise final cutting edge. It then was a pretty good knife.

It was just the plain initial shock of getting a nice looking business-like knife with all of Buck's reputation - to be so obtuse/dull.

Notice how wide the bevel is - sign that the blade is THICK and required substantial work to re-profile to get a reasonable secondary bevel so that even a standard 22deg each side (~45deg total) cutting edge bevel could be used.

DOZIER!! depending on size requirements:Pro Guide, Delta Traveler, Arkensas Traveler. The Travelers have a wonderful drop point and act like much larger knives for their size. Also, Dozier sheaths are unbeatable.

Interesting comments, UnkVT. I've been thinking for a while now that the most useful knife is the one you don't give a damn about. Sure, get the nice folders and fixed blades, but get a thick chunk of edged steel to throw in your toolbox, too.

I favor the Benchmade Nimravus Cub. It's not too big or small, the blade shape is versatile, the grip is good, and the knife sure looks cool, too. I don't remember if mine is 440C or ATS-34. I do plan to get a replacement for the kinda crappy sheath it came with. Okay, the sheath's not crappy, but I don't like the thumb-web-strap retention. I want kydex or concealex for the sheath.

:) The Dozier KS-3 Pro Guide's Knife arrived today -- wow, what a nice knife. The knife itself feels like perfection, smooth but not slick, nice lines. The scabbard is also nice, fitted with a low profile. Makes a nice package. :)
