Hello group,

Please allow me to indulge in an open ended question ;)

The knife would be used for outdoors, camping, hunting, hiking, etcetera :D

I am looking for a high quality knife with a good handle and high quality knife steel and modern material sheath.

I would appreciate your input.

Thank you,

BabyJWuu :D

How much are you willing/able to spend?

Off the top of my head: CS Trailmaster, and Ontario Raider Bowie come to mind.

ESEE Junglas, and the Browning Competition knife both have around a 10" blade, but otherwise fit your description. :)

Well if you got the money, go for something like a Busse Battle mistress
If you don't have that much, and don't mind the hollow handle, go for a Becker BK9

Hi, I went to the Busse website, but they do not have many knives to chose from. The BBM seems to be unavailable.

Cordially,

I think you can find plenty of Busse knives in the second hand market (including this site).
If you have the money and are willing to spend it, you should. It's a lot of money though.

You have to goto the Exchange here and search or the Want to Buy Forum if you want a Battle Mistress.

Hi, thank you for your input. I looked at all the knives and each of them has something I am looking for. May I be more specific.

- no carbon 1095
- no leather sheaths
- no krayton handles

Thank you,

BabyJWuu :D

Lots of choices in this area of knives. Look at CS Trail Master in all its' different iterations, Kabar bowies, Browning models, and one I just picked up for cheap and it is a pretty decent bowie and razor sharp enough to be scary! is a Coast bowie. These are 440c, 9.25" blade, great handle and guard and build quality is excellent. So there ya go. keepem sharp

I think you would be better off going with a Custom knife so you can get what you want.

And you must be prepared to pay a markup to buy one. If you want a really tough chopper you can buy at factory pricing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, I'd recommend you check out the Fehrman Final Judgement in CPM 3V. It appears to meet all of your conditions. :)

Hi, when it states "Satin Finish" is that similar to "Bead Blasting"? i.e. it removes the reflective shine?

Thank you,

Not all the time. ;)

Some can be found at close to original prices depending on the model, options etc, just have to watch and pounce when you see one.

Also people sell beaters too and they are reasonable, but you have to watch for them.

True. The Great Recession has surely had an impact on the secondary market. But I also know what you think of Fehrman CPM 3V knives. So I know I'm on safe ground with my recommendation. ;)

It's all good, just different.

Lots of good suggestions in here, another couple of good knives that might work for you are the Swamprat M9 (9" blade) or the Scrapyard Dogfather (10" blade).

You can find them on the secondary market for around $200 - $235.

No argument there, bc. :D I'm just not sure the OP would be satisfied with the Dog Father's Res-C handle. Too Kraton-like, I suspect. Having said that, he won't find a more comfortable knife for extended use than a Dog Father. There is something to be said for shock-absorbing handles on choppers.

I agree bld522 on the handle of the dogfather,
I have a Busse FBM and BWM which are awesome choppers. My favorite go to chopper is my SY Dogfather LE because of that comfortable handle. The handle doesn't look all that great, but its very comfortable and really absorbs the shock really good.:thumbup:

Just another suggestion I just thought of is the Scrapyard Son of Dogfather (SOD), its a 8" blade, but might be another knife to check out too.

Swamp Rat M9 will fit the bill. You'll have to search the exchange though and they don't come up too often.

I have some choppers, a couple are made of 'that' unbreakable steel.

My favorite chopper is my Spyderco Forester, wouldn't use it for hunting.
In my totally unverifiable chop tests the Forester out chopped the choppers that are reputed to make my Forester a puppy.

Yep, the other brand can shrug off numerous carpet bombings with a laugh, but I can't imagine a real life situation that would break my Forester.

me - 2 cents

The Spyderco Forester is discontinued now, did they replace it with an upgraded version?

Thanks
