Recommendations For Knives With Nine-Inch Blade??

The Spyderco Forester is discontinued now, did they replace it with an upgraded version?

Thanks

BabyJWuu

They are around somewhere, you just gotta look.
I can't figure out why they didn't catch on more. As it is, the Forester is most definitely the chopper that would go backpacking with me, if I were to bring a chopper.
The last 12 years I passed myself off as a woodworker and I have tons and tons of experience with hand tools.
The Hossom Forester, IMHO, is a well designed and very effective tool.
It feels very natural in my hand and can be worked for long periods of time without the fatigue that gargantuan choppers can offer.

Hi, thank you for your input. I looked at all the knives and each of them has something I am looking for. May I be more specific.

- no carbon 1095
- no leather sheaths
- no krayton handles

Thank you,

Fehrman Final Judgement. You can get a black coated blade as well as satin.

or

If you want stainless steel, Strider has a couple of models in the size you are looking for.

That won't work. The Junglas is constructed of 1095. And the OP designated he doesn't want 1095.

The Ontario Ranger lineup may warrant a look, specifically the RD series. These have micarta handles, 5160 blade steel, coated, clip points, 1/4" thick, and the RD-9 would fit the bill. Comes with the standard fabric sheath with hard plastic insert, but Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop has custom kydex sheaths form the RD-series.

Busse and Hossom would be my first picks if I were to choose. Other names were mentioned too.

BTW, if you want a chopper and hard use knive, you might as well look into kukris from HI here.Kydex Sheath you'd have to order separately, they come with traditional scabbards, but those knives are the beasts.

Hello group,

Strange that the Ontario RD9 knives are low in price considering they are using 5160 steel.

These steels seem to be the main one's being used in the knives you are recommending. How would you fellows compare the following steel types in large knives? Perhaps, a rating system for each out of a scale of ten would help someone at my level too!

1095 - Simple yet very efficient blade steel. Very popular with knifemakers. Sort of de-facto default carbon steel. Rusts easy though. Mostly you'll encounter it in 58-60HRC range. Several makers take it all thee way up to 64-65HRC. Sandvik makes very pure equivalent of this steel under Sandvik 20C Shock Absorber name.

5160 - Knife Steel FAQ - A steel popular with forgers, it is popular now for a variety of knife styles, but usually bigger blades that need more toughness. It is essentially a simple spring steel with chromium added for hardenability. It has good wear resistance, but is known especially for its outstanding toughness. This steel performs well over a wide range of hardnesses, showing great toughness when hardened in the low 50s Rc for swords, and hardened up near the 60s for knives needing more edge holding.

440C - High carbon stainless steel. Used to be premium steel, now mainly used in budget and mid range knives.

CPM 3V - Knife Steel FAQ - CPM's incredibly tough 3V gives excellent wear resistance and good stain resistance as well, although when it does stain, it is said to pit rather than surface rust. When maximum toughness is desired, with very good wear resistance, 3V is a great choice.

Thank you

If you want to spend the cash 3V and INFI are amazing all around steels that are slightly stain resistant.

I have a bunch of 1095 and 5160 knives ... as well as some 3V and INFI.

1095 is a breeze to put an edge on and pretty tough

5160 is super tough and holds a pretty good edge.

I'm not really worried about corrosion so for the price of a 5160 blade it's hard to beat.

Don't really think that I'd pursue a 440C chopper.

Lots of choices in this area of knives. Look at CS Trail Master in all its' different iterations, Kabar bowies, Browning models, and one I just picked up for cheap and it is a pretty decent bowie and razor sharp enough to be scary! is a Coast bowie. These are 440c, 9.25" blade, great handle and guard and build quality is excellent. So there ya go. keepem sharp

Where did you find the Coast?

Nine-inch blade? Easy.
