Recommendations for Relative Newbie

The ZT 0300 is probably the only production knife that meets and exceeds your needs. a spyderco military is a excellent knife but a pure cutting tool, its ground thin so abusive use is not in its vocabulary.

The ZT was designed to get down and dirty, not a knife you could easily hurt. For sharpening get a diamond oval sharpening rod.

I just received my Kershaw Lahar couple days ago, you may want to check it out, it's got the VG-10 clip point blade, also a nice recurve, very thick steel liners, G10 scales, looks like a tough knife, and the best part, it's only 60 bucks, I would get 4 of this and forget about the ZT if I really need it for hard use, lol

I'm with those who recommend ZT 300 series. I had one and it was a far more robust knife than a Sebenza.

I also agree with folks who are steering you away from the Military--I've had several and although it's one of the best production knives out there, it's not any heavier duty than a Sebenza.

Another option I'd consider is a small pocketable fixed blade like the ESEE Izula (<$50) or Becker BK-11 (<$40). These will fit in a back pocket or can be worn around you neck.

In fact, for what you are willing to spend you could have one of the makers on Bladeforums--Gossman, Fiddleback Forge, etc.--make you a very nice custom fixed blade. I know you want a folder, but a fixed blade made with a tough tool steel is going to be even tougher and more durable than a ZT, IMHO.

One last thing--I think using a knife to pry with is a bad idea. There are some knives that will work for that--Busse-kin come to mind-- but even the ZT 300s are not suitable, IMHO. Get yourself a small pry bar.

Hi,

All the knives recommended are very nice. My choice for doing what you want your knife to handle is the venerable Buck 110. The 110 has been doing those kinds of jobs successfully for over 40 years. And it will most probably still be doing them 40 years from now.

My 2 suggestions:

ZT-300, I have no hesitations to put mine through anything because I know It can handle It.
ESEE 4 or 5.

Both knives have GREAT blade steels, and EXCELLENT companies with full warranties that stand behind their products. The people are nice too. :D

Ditto, and ditto.

BTW, Welcome to SpookyDriver!

DPX H.E.S.T i cant speak for the folder but if you decide to go with a small fixed blade its a beast with a built in pry bar, suprised no one has said it actually(unless i missed it)

good luck with your hunt
