I was not aware that MBC was a copyrighted Spyderco term. I used the term as I have seen it used on this forum to refer generically to self-defense with a knife as a weapon. I stand corrected.
Teaching any non-martial artists, the focus of instruction would be on being alert and aware and avoiding trouble. The next level would be breaking a hold and strike/run or with a knife, slash/run - very very simple stuff and certainly not standing and fighting and expecting to win an armed confrontation. In my seminars which cover a wide variety of topics, I would not be going beyond this superficial level of weapons awareness.
I like Spyderco knives. The Gunting and Gunting Trainer are excellent self-defense knives and I'm sure their utility increases with proper instruction and regular training. I would point interested serious students to MBC/Spyderco/Gunting/Bram Frank/Janich training.
I like the responses to this thread - lots of good suggestions. Thanks to all.
