Hey everyone! First I'd like to thank everyone for their time and recommendations. I'm in construction so I want (need lol) a knife that is stout and will hold an edge. It has to be 3-3.5 inch blade. I also want it to have good slicing capabilities. The other ability of the knife must be for self defense. I really like the kershaw cryo but its not made for abuse and the steel. Some options that I've looked at are benchmade 275 (a little big), bemchmade 810 (again a little big, but a big possibility with the CPM m4), zt0350 and the zt0566, zt0562. I have always heard mixed reviews on the zt elmax, will it stand up to abuse or not?

The zt550 goes with me to work every day since I received it. I can recommend that from first hand experience, I build transmission power lines.

Take a self defense class from southnarc and you will realize that small fixed blades are far superior to folders

Take a self defense class from southnarc and you will realize that small fixed blades are far superior to folders. The problem is deployment. Even his spyderco pkal is not 100% reliable in the stress of a srlf defense situation.

Emerson Journeyman fits your criteria pretty well. It's blade is a little longer than you wanted though. The Emerson holds its edge pretty well but the benefit is the steel is run a little softer to increase toughness and resist chipping. A desirable quality in construction work. Emersons are designed to be for tactical/self defense use so that's covered also.

I have plenty of top quality fixed blades and I actually have taken a lot of self defense classes and courses. I'm looking for a top quality folder, one that I can count on and can use all day on a job site then pull it out of my pocket and deploy it quickly when or if need be.

Ahhhh yes I forgot about Emerson! Does the edge actually last? I love my benchmades but the 154cm edges don't get me through a day

Emerson run a good heat treat on their 154cm and pull the most out of the steel. I have not had any problems keeping an edge and have often been surprised with the degree that the 154cm keeps it's edge.

It sounds like a Journeyman may be right up your alley.

Anything by cold steel pretty much. The triad lock is crazy strong

I have a few cold steels and they are nice but I've broken them and the blade steel lacks for me. And I want a knife to be assisted or just a very good flipper and preferably a frame lock

you would definitely have to worry about the tip breaking. It's a fantastic knife but not what you're looking for.

Some suggestions:

Benchmade 950 Rift. 154CM or S30V (the black/orange one):

Benchmade Barrage 580 (154CM) or 581 (M390):

+1 on the Spydie Para 2, and a vote for the ZT 0561 if you can throw in more cash.

For a hard use tactical folder that can double as a defensive tool I would put my issued gerber 06 g10 auto up against anything
