Recommendations on Blades and Compasses

The Clipper would work fine for a pocket kit. The Ranger 27 is an excellent choice, as recommended by previous posters.

The May Fireant is a great little knife, but it is a little small. The F1 is probably more suited as a backcountry knife. I own my share of customs, the ones that get used the most are 3-3.5" blades with handles of 4-5". The little guys are fine for hunting or fishing duties, but are tough to handle when the weather is cold or wearing gloves. Charles Skifa Scandi is a great looking knife. I'd be leaning in that direction if I wanted a May knife.

Great. Since you will have an orienteering compass, the Clipper is a good choice. I've had one clipped on my binocular strap for years used as a quick reference. It's always checked out as accurate and dependable for me. It makes a backup for the one on my neck and one in my watch. My etrex is wonderful and I use it a lot but not as a replacement for a good compass. :) Regards, ss.

Knife choice is difficult as each has his own idea of what they'll be faced with. I have often thought the Chris Reeve Aviator with a fire rod in the handle would be close to ideal.
I'm looking for compass alternatives myself as I want a Silva 40NL but can't find them in the U.S., The closest durable one is a bit more pricey, made by Pyser. http://www.bestglide.com/FB1605_Info.html

My wife got me a bark river canadian special with the matching fire steel for christmas.
I normally carry a chris reeves knife as my edc but the last fews days it has been this knife.
