Ok, ok, I know some of you are thinking "Just one Case?! Blasphemy!" or rolling on the floor laughing at my wild optimism (Look, don't mess with my delusions, ok?) but I am looking to add just a single Case knife to my small collection. Here is my wish list:

> CV steel
> Bone handle (at least not delrin, not a yellow fan)
> Not one of these patterns/styles: stockman, sodbuster, copperhead, wharncliffe half/whittler
> Probable uses will be EDC and a bit of whittling

From my research so far I am leaning towards the chestut bone SBJ which seems to be an exemplar of Case's skill and quality,

Your opinions, alternate suggestions and as always humor is greatly appreciated. Have a great holiday,

TIA

If you only want one knife, delete this thread and go away.....your doomed lol :)

If the SBJ is already sticking out to you then just get it. The peanut will get lots of suggestions. Maybe just a regular case pen? Tuxedo? Personaly if you only want one, I would go with the 3 1/2" trapper that sports the cali clip and wharncliffe blade. Gives ya the best of both worlds andyou will use one blade more then the other. This will help you pic your next one ;)

Merry Christmas
Jeff

The Sway Back Jack is a good choice, as is the Small Texas Jack. I own both and carry the Small Texas Jack regularly. Though the Wharncliffe blade on the SBJ may be more conducive to whittling. I am not a whittler so I can't really advise you.

Actually given your restrictions, those are the only two currently produced Case CV knives that would be suitable for whittling, unless you want to consider the stag handled version of the Small Texas Jack, or the single-blade Wharncliffe Mini Trapper in stag CV.

Everything else is pretty much Stockman or Trapper patterns, unless you want to whittle with a Canoe, Muskrat, or Peanut which would not be my first choices.

CV mini trapper. I use it for all of the things you named and much more. Very pocket friendly. 3 1/2 " closed. Comes in chestnut:thumbup:

front left in picture, obviously.

If you are only going to get one go for the latest Case / Bose collaborations. That one will cover a lot of requirements in one knife.

I love the Chestnut Bone CV Mini Trapper, but I don't know how well suited the California clip + long spey blade combo is for whittling.

Now the Wharncliffe Mini Trapper might be a good whittlin' knife, but it's only offered in stainless steel.

I´d also recommend you the SBJ or the Texas Jack. Great knives that I really like to carry :)

I think the Chestnut bone with CV steel Mini Trapper is one of the best buys out there.
I ordered one to give as a Christmas present for around $35.
The SBJ will cost you more, but its a great little knife too.

Nothing new to add. It's the SBJ or mini trapper. The SBJ performs well for it's fairly small dimensions.

SBJ--as mentioned has a straight-edged Wharncliffe blade and a smaller Pen blade with just a touch of belly. This knife is a more recent design and is built to a higher standard of fit and finish than most other Case knives. The pen blade has a wraparound spring, which prevents lint and gunk from filling in the space between the tip of the Pen blade and the bolster.

Besides whittling, this knife does really well on draw cuts, like cutting up an apple.

JC hit the nail on the head. SBJ or Texas Jack, can't go wrong with either.

SBJ or vintage 6332 or 6318HE stockman.

It depends on the type of whittling? Making big sticks into smaller sticks or making sling shots for the boys is the whittling I was talking about. Now as far as intricate whittling not so much. The mini is a do anything kind of EDC for me:thumbup:

If you have money and time, like the hunt as much as the knife itself. Go for a stag seahorse whittler in rainbow damascus.

Not sure why you're against the stockman; they make excellent whittler knives, and the midsize stockman with rounded bolsters is my favorite pattern.

Still disregarding the stockman,? My second choice in Case knives is the peanut.

FYI, both of these knives above are CV and are available at the largest Case dealer.

Not sure if needed, but here's a side-by-side of the two knives in Bob W's post there:

Poor lighting, both are better looking than that pic shows.
