Time for a new multi-tool, my Charge is going back to Leatherman and it's time to check out the competition.

The only requirements I have are:
1.) Must have black oxide coating, I am around moisture all the time.
2.) Scissors

Everything else is pretty standard so I'm not picky if it only has 97 screwdrivers and not 98.

Links and pictures are much appreciated.

Thanks!

The Leatherman Blast and New Wave are both available in Black finishes. The Gerber multi-plier 600 DET crimper tool, which is designed for EOD use, is available in black. That particular model does not have scissors though. Sog powerlocks are available in either black oxide or a black/grey tiger stripe finish. Also, while stainless, Victorinox tools have a great reputation for rust resistence.

Get whatever species of Victorinox Swisstool floats your boat and never look back . . . I don't think they come in black though.

I like the Spirit as an edc, but I have one of the larger models for heavier, abusive work. I have had several Leathermans and the Swisstools feel better made, have a better array of implements, and all of them are acessible without unfolding the tool. I feel like Leatherman has gotten a little too gimicky lately and quality is suffering a bit.

I also vote Victorinox. You're going to have a really hard time getting it to rust. Very nice tools:) If you really want one with a black coating, then I would check out the SOGs. Plus, you can customize your SOG for little money and work:thumbup: I've been carrying a SOG powerlock for a few weeks now. I work in the swimming pool industry, and i'm around chlorine and water all day long. I haven't had a speck of rust on the SOG yet, and I haven't done anything special to it other than give it a quick shake off and pat it with a towel. YMMV.

Its the original SwissTool, no scissors. The only SwissTool I know of that comes in black.

If rust prevention is the only reason for black coating then I will add my voice to others....I have yet to have Victorinox tool rust on me.

The Spirit, SwissTool X , SwissTool RS and SwissTool CS Plus all have scissors - basically all SwissTool models appart from the original SwissTool and the new Spirit S.

I own the swisstool and can verify that this is one tough tool. No rust what so ever, polished blades. Id recommend this but if you want scissors the swisstool x may be the one that you want.

You can also check out the LM-Surge in black oxide finish, come's with scissors and, for me, is the most robust LM out there, save the LM-Core, of course.

My multitool inventory includes an original Swisstool without scissors, and a Spirit, which has hardly any. I had hoped the Spirit would be an all-in-one EDC, but found the scissors a disappointment. It is tiny, doesn't open as wide even as scissors on the Classic, and hardly worth the space it occupies. I carry a Leatherman Micra or Squirt S4, which serve quite well as a supplement for multitools lacking adequate, or any scissors.

Over decades, I have never had a SAK or a Leatherman product rust on me.

I recommend that you check out either Swisstool or Sog. My favorite is the Swisstool Spirit. The Powerlock is also a decent tool (probably the best pliers).

As to Leatherman....I never had one until recently. I bought the Charge AL (actually bought a couple of them online). Having never handled one, I thought I would try one of their top-of-the-line models. Compared to Swisstool - or even SOG - the Charge is junk...IMHO of course. I'm extremely disappointed in Leatherman.

My first recommendation -- Swisstool Spirit!

I like black oxide finishes to, but i think stainless finishes are less prone to rusting or water damage.

My gerber is constantly covered up in powdered sugar, chocolate, caramel, cocoa powder. It's gets wet all the time, never rusted. Unless you work in salt water, I think any mutli-tool would be fine.
