Recommendations: RIG (rust inhibiting grease) to use on HC Damascus?

Hey d.r.h., I read on some gun reviews that frog lube when applied and stored for a long time becomes a very "gunky" and pasty. Then leaves a very sticky residue and discoloration on guns. So, I am not sure if it also applies to HC steels...

Paste? what kind of paste?

All I can tell you is what my experience has been. I have knives that have been coated with frog lube and have remained, unused, in my knife chest for 2 years and are not sticky or gunky. Is it a "miracle" CLP? Who knows. I have never found a "miracle" anything. I like it because 1) it seems to work and 2) I like the smell! I used to be a big fan of Ballistol (we are talking about for at least a couple decades). It, however, did seem to congeal in bottles that had a lot of exposure to air. Also noticed that it worked great initially in pivot areas ... but also got a little gunky there. Now I only fluorinated grease for pivots and frog lube for blades.

And, as I said, frog lube comes in two types ... a liquid and a paste. Two things to note about frog lube. You don't have to use a lot ... and you should remove it if switching to a petroleum based CLP. Alcohol does a great job of removing frog lube.

I really wanted to give Frog Lube a try but just heard a lot of horror stories about them. Also, as what you have mentioned, the Minty smell of Frog Lube really makes me curious too plus it is food safe right?

Anyway, I am happy that it works for you really well. I just don't have the courage to test it on a 1999 piece... :)
