Maybe I woke up a little crabby, or maybe I'm just a dick, but I am so tired of people recommending this or that material or tool without ANY experience to back up that recommendation.
I recently read a post where someone responded, "I would say use (xxx), but I don't have any experience with (xxxx)"
If you've never used both of the items being questioned, why would you even think of posting a response?

It's very tiresome and a waste of time

No, that is not the same thing.
Your examples are based on scientific studies or known past experience.
Neither of those were sited in the response I am referring to.

It's the internet man, that's just the way it is. You take the good, leave the bad and ignore the ignorant.
Honestly, I always try not to comment on things I know nothing about, but have been guilty of this none the less.

I guess I'll never understand why people get riled up about things like that on a discussion forum. If the person was trying to pass along erroneous information as experienced fact, well, that's another story.

The other day I saw someone snap at a person for being off-topic. Their *very* next post (in the same thread no less) was totally off topic! I thought it was funny.

While it's easy to get irritated by comments made by others on a discussion forum, I think it's important to remember how we'd treat others if the situation were in real life.

Haven't you learned yet, that people with little knowleage are more willing to share that knowelage?

It is simple. When you gather enough knowelage on some topic you know there is no simple and easy answer for most questions, but you do not have time to write the page long answer.
So you say nothing.

Best way to get recomendation is to ask personaly somebody who know. You will get his bias, but also a good answer.

Ima so confused......................................

again

Imagine that!

Sometimes those knowledgeable people forget they were once new and had questions of their own. I learned this craft as well as the other related skills in 'rsal life.' I subsequently only got one or two persons' input and bias. Coming here totally changed what I do and how I do it.

In my day job and here, I think it is important to pass on what we know. And you are right. How many questions can be answered with a "well, it depends" answer...? It is the responsibility of the learned to try their best to give at least a cliff's notes version of the answer. Muddling around in the dark sucks. If I had real instruction years ago I'd be a lot farther along. I'm glad I found this place.

And in my day job I have to constantly remind myself that we have freedom of speech in this country, and that covers posting on a forum. Thankfully we have freedom of listening too.

I would love to see some of the great makers that I know just lurk here become more involved. It would assist in shortening the learning curves of some new makers. Is it frustrating to have a b.s. post? Yes, but overall this forum is doing something right. The 'firsts' that have been shown lately are superb. My first knife was a putty knife by comparison :)

Freedom of speech is a right. Rights come with responsibilities. One should be responsible that what they say is correct. This is why, even though the Constitution guarantees you the right to free speech, you can't yell "Fire" in a room full of people.

In your day job you regularly get to remind people that they have another right....The right to remain silent. In many cases this right isn't used when it should be :)
