recommended EDC knife?

The Boker Chad Los Banos designed Trance Plus folder with 2 3/4" blade meets all of your specifications - and then some.

Another  for the Trance. I've gifted a few and have one for myself, best bang for the buck IMHO.

Great suggestion. I have one of these and it is an awesome EDC. The framelock is very good and positive. Also you can carry tip up or tip down. While AUS-8 is not the best steel, it seems good in this knife. It does have a design that you have to hold to appreciate, just like it's little brother the Subcom.

Hows about a Kershaw Needs Work in the 30 ish dollar range, tough as nails and speedsafe to boot. For knocking around the house/yard you can't hardly beat somehting with good grip and a wharncliffe blade.

For the price and what you get of an inexpensive knife I would recommend the Bird lineup of knives, you can get one for less the $30 bucks.

The Spyderco Native is what you're looking for, I think. I also
like the Cold Steel Medium Voyager and the CRKT M21-02.
Blade size is never quite 3-inches, despite how they're
advertised. I think the manufacturers want to make sure
their knives are just under.
