recommended mini hatchet

Thanks for the details, that is a very fine eye. Some of the really dense hardwoods would be very durable in that area, any of the current crop of high strength synthetics would be as well. Though I doubt the market would be high for high grade handle/replacements. Since strength is so sensitive to cross section though just a little more thickness can turn something from fragile to exceptionally durable, and vice versa. I have read a number of reports on them, this was the first I have heard of that aspect, nice to know.

Thanks, I scanned through that before, should have read it more carefully,or else it was added to since last I read it. The comparison pictures are really telling. I like hatchets in general but really wonder about the overall utility vs other tools especially when the eye gets that small. Have there been an issues reported with handles on the Bruks mini? Has anyone compared that to a Wildlife?

I have used the Bruks for a couple of years and can't see the handle being a problem. Getting a lot of power in the swing isn't much of a help (or that possible)....and for splitting I use a baton.

I am the Masters Shot Put record holder for the NWT and notoriously hard on tools. The little GB hasn't let me down.

Thanks, given the cross section I would be surprised if there were frequent problems. You are looking at over five times the strength of the Vaughan.

Out of curiousity has anyone broken a Vaughan in wood working? Temper, how much is the Wetterling mini?

-Cliff

Not a Vaughn, but a GB Mini chopping some really dry chestnut oak.

I heard they cost more (the minis) cause they have to replace more of 'em.

I have seen two other such problems, that is a hardening/steel issue. I have broken bits lof similar extent but it takes a severe impact off of a rock and there is usually a lot of deformation around the point of impact.

That looks exactly like the damage that ocured on my small forrest axe. I sent it back a month ago and still waiting on replacement.
