Recon 1 and AK47 Discontinued?

Code 4 is going to XHP as well.

Based on the fact that I found a Cold Steel 2015 page on their site with the XL Counter-Point in CTS-BD1 steel I suspect that many of the G10 handled knives will be going to XHP, while the Grivory handled knives will be switching to BD1. On the other hand, a Mini Tuff Lite in XHP steel would be very cool.

I don't know about their XL knives, 5 inches and up. I would think that the sheer size of them might make XHP financially unattractive but we could be surprised.

Even though my needs don't actual require anything more than the Aus8, I do applaud them for making that move. There is definitely a market for high-end knives, coupled with exclusive use of the Triad-lock, they still should be able to sell quite easily. I do hope they make them as affordable as possible. For years people have been stating that they would buy Cold Steel, if only they upgraded the steel, now its time for some folks to put their money where their mouth was.

I'm pretty sure that once the newer steels become production items for whatever knives they do change, Cold Steel will still keep the price as affordable as possible. That seems to be their business model - best bang for the buck for people who use their knives hard.

i will keep my recon 1 in aus 8....good blade..little time on the sharpening stone and it will fillet you something scary...

When the American Lawman comes out in CTS-XHP it will be THE knife to buy. This is very good steel and holds an edge quite well.

The BD1 is a good steel and better than any stainless CS has used, as far as I can recall.

This, this, this. I have said it for years. If the American Lawman had a better steel, it will rank right up there in hype and favor as the Paramilitary 2. A Lawman in CTS-XHP would be a dream come true.

I wonder if the Code-4 is intended to backfill the market for the AUS-8 AKs and Recons?

With the Carpenter steel and DLC, I imagine the price will double from current street prices.

MSRP is like 20% higher, so I don't see street prices doubling...

All the talk of prices doubling before new MSRPs were announced was just a lot of conjecture based on when the limited run of Recons in XHP came out. A doubling of street priced based solely on this steel change is completely unrealistic. My most recent Cold Steel purchase (a spear point mini Recon in AUS-8) cost just a hair over $50. When the new steel hits, I'm thinking this same knife will probably be more in the $70 ballpark. Still a great deal for a great knife.

Also, I know that to a lot of people, value has set Cold Steel apart in the past. However, knives like the Ontario Rat folders and the ESEE Avispa and Zancudo have given people even cheaper options with the same steel and Taiwanese construction. I'm ecstatic that Cold Steel is taking steps like this to up their game and remain competitive.

I think upgrading the steel is a good move and it seems to suggest that the informed knife buyer like those who frequent Bladeforums are a substantial market. I've heard so many times how we're not the typical buyer but it seems that we're becoming more influential.

I hope you're right, sincerely. The Recon 1 Spear Point is going for just about $55-$60 right now. I'm probably pessimistic, but I won't be surprised to see $90 when they release.

Indeed, some of my pessimism about price increases is based on the limited release XHP models.

I'm not a Cold Steel fan boy, and I absolutely love the RAT 1, but the Tri-Ad makes the Recon 1 worth the higher price.

I hoped CS would have simply offered both AUS-8 and XHP models, but it looks to not be the case. Cold Steel is, in my perception, the top-of-the-line non-collector "everyday working man's" knife - putting to shame the garbage issued by Gerber, Taylor ("Schrade" [in quotes since it's just a name now] and Smith & Wesson), and worse we all see in most sporting goods stores. Of course, there are plenty of working men who use higher priced and even higher quality knives, but I'm thinking the "average dude" who wants "the best" but not his entire wallet.

I dig the new knives and the new steels. I'll be saving my money for some future spending, that is for sure!
