Never held one in person so need opinions,. I generally like decent sized folders. Mini grips have proven to small for my taste,. So question is would a recon 1 be too large for edc? Opinions please!

It depends
I edc a voyager xl and I'm fine with it.
It is noticeable in my pocket but you get used to it.
Only drawback or maybe a plus 😬
Is it scares the crap out of people when you flip it open.

Thats what I carry every day, its about the same size as a zt560 only a little flatter. Its a easy carry in jeans or cargo pants with no problems.

I dont think so at all. I wasn't overwhelmed by the size when I first got mine. I was very happy that I didn't get the mini.

depends on your hand size, i wear medium gloves and the large is good for me, very comfortable. My daughter has small hands and likes the mini better. The extra large can even be carried comfortably but is silly huge to use for most things. The regular with 4 inches blade just hits the right size for me. I like the G10, the aluminum handles I've had were slippery especially if your hands are wet or muddy.

The new steel sure holds a sweet edge especially if you strop it some.

Cargo pants accommodate the Recon 1 fine. For jeans, I carry IWB or in the hip pocket. Jacket or vest pocket also works well. I am considering stitching up a belt sheath -- there are also a few sheath makers who do some fine fitted sheaths for the Recon 1. Great knife, CTS-XHP steel, light carbon fiber grip, Tri-Ad lock, ergonomic design. The American Lawman is another good choice, slightly smaller but an easier carry.

I EDCed the recon one clip point for a few years in AUS-8A.
I pounced on a new recon 1 when they put it out in their new carpenter steel. That's my current EDC but I also carry a CS tuff lite as well. For cardboard, tape, ect.

The recon 1 and mini Recon 1 both feel good in hand imo.

Blade-wise, the mini is minimal small as I like to carry, regular is maximum as big as I prefer to carry in a folder, so for me, the code4 hits that sweet spot, unless you really want the g10 handles.
My #1 gripe with cold steel is I don't like the clips.

As for is it too big to edc, if you typically prefer "smaller" knives, opt for the mini. If you prefer Larger folders, opt for the regular 4".

I don't think it's too big to EDC. In fact I'm carrying one today. I have a regular spear point in the old AUS-8 I use as a beater, happy to loan it out for a test drive if you'd like.

It's a great knife. The code 4 fills the gap nicely between the mini and regular Recon as well.

I carried an Aus8 one for about 6 months. It's a great knife, very light and durable but some issues meant it was not a good edc choice for me. It's pretty wide in the pocket so it takes up the whole thing and it's hard to fit a hand past it. The G10 shredded jeans from the clip all the way down to the butt end. The strong back-spring needs a hearty wrist flick to be overcome one handed. This makes a LOUD noise as it locks up, so it's difficult to be discreet opening this blade, even when 2 handed. I love how slim this knife is, but EDC was not the best role for my needs.

Light for the size, blade is enough for almost anything you need, lock won't fail on you, ever.

If you like large folders and want a nice grip (one of the most ergonomic knives in every poll of this forum asking that question), go for it!

I often forget I'm carying mine.

It can be flicked opened with no wrist flick. Just thumb. Takes a bit of break in. You can open it quietly also, if our desire. Just not fast and quiet.

It is wide in pocket. But managable.

I sold my recon 1, the 5 oz 4 inch blade was more than I needed on a day to day basis. The mini recon is 3 oz, the CTS xhp version. It has a slightly longer handle than the mini griptilian enabling me to get a four finger grip on it.

I had a recon 1 and sold it. It was too big for my taste. I prefer 3.5 inches of smaller for EDC. As of lately I've been getting into the small knife scene. My Spyderco native 5, Delica 4 and especially my Spyderco Techno

You might want to try a Cold Steel Broken Skull. It has a 4 inch blade in a very thin package and weighs only 3.1 ounces. You can forget you have it because it is a very nice size knife in a lite weight package. Kevin 👍
