Recovering question

very nice job... everything looks tight. I've been thinking of doing something like that as a project, but haven't had the guts to try it yet.

It can be a little nerve racking, the first one I ever did was actually my first knife given to me as a kid by my great uncle. It was unusable so I figured I had nothing to lose. It wasn’t an expensive knife either. I ripped it apart completely, straightened liners and a blade. Cleaned it all up and put it back together disposing of the hollow bolsters one of which was long gone anyway. Recovered it in some homemade denim micarta. I still carry and use it occasionally.

I’ve done a number of screw on scales for modern folders too but those aren’t nerve racking other than possible waste of time and materials if you mess up. Good to experiment with how different materials respond to cutting and sanding though.

Next was one of those Queen made Northwoods Everyday Barlows. The bone looked terrible, so I dyed and jigged it. It looked ok but it also had a spreading crack. I ripped it apart intending to keep the bolsters but without the covers one was really loose. The Northwoods logo was also not well done on it either so instead I just went ahead and took them off too. Recovered it in some nice oak and added a red pinstripe where the Barlow bolster would have ended. That knife really should have gone back as it was terrible from the get-go, but I decided it would be one to experiment on.

When I got to this one I told myself I’d only do it on a day I felt exceptionally patient, lol! Even though it’s not an expensive knife, it was in perfect working order and a gift. Mind you the plan when I told the wife I wanted it, was to recover it so I wanted to get to it at some point.

Since I did it, it’s been the only traditional I’ve carried whereas I usually switch every other day or so.

Just thought I’d post an update in case anyone happens to care, lol! I’ve been carrying this knife for a few months now. After I recovered it, it was my sole carry for over a month. Since then I’ve let a few others in its place a few times but it’s still in pocket, or in use about 80% of the time. There has been no cracks, gaps, shrinkage or movement of any kind.
I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the edge retention of this “440 razor sharp steel”. It didn’t take much work to get it shave sharp, it stays sharp through much use and is easy to bring back with just the ultra fine side of my Spyderco Double Stuff.
This is easily my favourite knife, it’s not the “best” knife I’ve got but the combination of being a gift, something I worked on myself, and just being a good knife with set of blades suited to my uses,(especially with the Spey to package opener mod) it’s just a great carry!
