Recreation in the bush

Wow, I would never but being out in the bush or wild and boredom in the same sentance. Some cool ideas though.

+2 on that one

But give me a rock and I'm entertained for hours.

I find that cooking can be a good way to pass the time. The challenges of being outdoors almost makes it interesting and time consuming. Plus you can make tons of stuff in a dutch oven.

There's always a book I need to read or brush-up on. I bring an atlas and make notes in that on any neat stuff I find. Tomahawk and slingshot practice is always worthwhile, although I clearly haven't had enough of either :o Walking semi-aimlessly and skipping stones across a lake are often under-rated, and on car-camping trips I make sure to bring one really special meal, a nice steak or piece of salmon, and the fixin's. No better ambience in the world for a fine meal.

And there's always booze...

Amen brother, heheh. :D

I would get bored when waiting for others to show up at the spot. you can't go too far in case they come along while you are out. Waiting is something I am not good at, so games help. I actually don't like to read in the bush, not for recreation anyway. I find reading makes me silent and distracted, not something I feel comfortable with when in grizzly country with a steak on the grill, especially if I am alone.

When I am hiking the trail, I usually think about all the stressors I have going on. Like everyone else, it's a lot. I miss the gorgeous views, the sounds of the world around me. I was walking down the local road, along the guardrail, and completely missed a deer carcass on the other side of the rail, I was worrying. Now, not like I'm meditating, but I block out any negative thoughts, and just enjoy the outdoors. Stop and see a lot more.

If it's the whole family, we play Chicken foot, a pretty fun domino game. Otherwise, I prefer to wet a hook.

i live in the bush. just listen and you will be amazed! if that doesn't work, apply yourself to understand the true meaning of wilderness! games are meant to occupy your mind and take you away from reality. isn't the point of 'being in the wild' to escape the mindless games of society? seperate and observe, you will be amazed!!

Besides reading, I like to whittle little objects, like chickens, then leave them where other people might happen upon them. I like to imagine a stranger's smile when he/she finds a little chicken nesting under a picnic table, or a small wooden figure stuck in the side of a tree.

Knife play, or just sitting smokin my pipe, and sippin some coffee, enjoyin the down time.

Believe me brother, you'll eventually get bored too. I spent the better half of a century doing the same thing as you, ultimately living in the brush, but just like those who live in the city, our surroundings will eventually become boring, whether you like it or not. ;) Heh, especially once you reach my age, the mere thought of hanging out in the brush for a prolonged period of time is enough to make you want to dig out those resort brochures. ;) I still make my way back into the thickett from time to time, but not like I once did. I still like a good weekend or so out in the trees, however. :D

This is truly a wonderful idea to embrace! I too can imagine the look of elated visitors if they were to find such an unexpected pleasantry. Very selfless, and I commend you for your forethought!

I'm with SHS... I go to the woods to enjoy them so, I try to see how many tracks I can identify, how many animals I can see and since I got my pamphlets I'm trying to identify edible plants and different types of trees. Of course, with a 10 month old and citified wife, I don't get as much woods time as I like so I don't get bored there anymore. I remember being a kid and getting bored in the woods sometimes though. That's when tag and hide and seek came in handy. No tools required, just my brothers.

One caveat I'd like to add to my frisbee shnanigans - that was near the end of a long adventure; we were getting picked up the next day.

I'd counsel against any unnecessary running around and jumping when you are 'out there'. The walk we did was very remote and a rolled ankle/sprained knee in the wrong place would have created a world of dramas, some of them life threatening.

On most of my adventures it's a pretty full day anyway. Get up, cook, eat, pack up, cover necessary grund to next water source, un-pack, cook, eat and sleep - it's a pretty full day all on it's own.
