 Can a Recurve work as a Camp Knife?

With that in mind here’s something I have been working on.

12” overall with a 7” blade of A2 tool steel “Leopard Lace” Oak scales.

What do you think, do Recurves have a place in out wilderness gear?

Good looking curves there! Recurve definitely work for me :) I do get bored hearing folks say how hard they are to sharpen though. I have never found recurves to be any harder to sharpen than a straight edge myself.

I am sure the folks over on the Becker forum looking for KaBar to bring back the Brute would surely tell you that recurves have a place in the world of camp knives, and I would agree.

A few more shots of my full convex recurve.

And in its Sharpshooter Bravo Style sheath.

Beautiful combination (knife & sheath), Big Mike. Wish they were mine!

Of course, a recurve works as a camp knife (wait, did we ever finalize what a camp knife is??? :D )

Here is my only big knife and only recurve blade. This is O1 3/16" steel, 8" blade & 13" OAL. I reshaped the handles to better fit my grip. I was chopping it through some black oak and it ruled!!! The forward weight of the blade did all the hard work. Making it less taxing for me physically. It performed well, and changed my opinion about big knives as chopping tools.

That is beautiful. I can't imagine not wanting to carry that.

Good looking curves there!

Thanks Bill, that’s a critique that I will always remember.

As one who has been buying/modding/creating recurves for years,

…I too have never found them to be any more difficult to sharpen. :jerkit:

I picked up a Fox River Recurve from KSF that I really like. Haven't carried it yet, but I have no doubt whatsoever that it will get the job done. Most of my touch up sharpening is done with a diamond sharpening rod anyhow, so the recurve should be no issue.

Wow:thumbup: I've never used a recurve much, but that's one that could persuade me:D

Really, really nice work there, Mike!!! That handle material is amazing, but the entire knife is very well proportioned, and looks like it would be a pretty handy sidekick in the outdoors.

So thats where you have been hiding.......;)

Looks absolutely great Mike, better than I imagined it would. Now when am I gonna get a chance to play with it?????:):)

Thats my kind of knife! I love it.
The recurve section great for shaving and splitting and the front for slicing and a nicely positioned tip too. Nice handle.
What are the dimensions? I want one!

dammmmmnNN!!! i wasnt a fan of recurves at first...but that there is a damn fine piece of craftsmanship!!! i literally drooled... great job!

Thanks Walt, the recurve is deceptive in that the changing angle of attack as the edge is drawn through the medium being cut is so efficient that works like longer blade.

But recurves require a bit of skill to use, they are slicers not choppers on the cutting board in the camp kitchen, but a heavy blade like this can also be very good chopper when it come to fire duty.

Absolutely Mike. I feel you get more downward power/thrust with a recurve them a straight edge. The sweet spot is usually just forward of the curve headed toward the point.
Very nicely done on that one Mike.

Mike,

I'm pretty sure that won't work as a camp knife, you should send it directly to me and rid yourself of this unseemly object:D....
