I'm going to make a recurve knife soon from some flat stock, any tips? I use a 1x42 belt sander, and most familiar with convex grind without platen attached.

I would suggest to do it by hand as you are not familiar to flat grinding. It is quite easy to make it with draw filing. The knife at the attachment was done without any machinery involved. I was not able to get satisfactory results with flat platen, you need very good hand and/or a curved platen to get satisfactory results for recurved blades. I found the draw filing is just as fast as grinder work if you do it right. Also there will be minor or no irregularity of grinds to be corrected by hand after filing....
