Recycled $3 Collins Legitimus

on very mushroomed polls, i will grind off some of it, and peen the rest into a better shape. peening after grinding also makes the grinding much less obvious, doesnt look so much like a reworked poll.

I have another bigger head that had more severe mushrooming. After peening for awhile it began mushrooming out the back of the poll. At this point I had already lost the Sager portion of the stamp so I stopped and turned to the flappy paddle disc to smooth everything out. Usually I would file but I was feeling lazy. I will now gently peen to get rid of the almost polished finish and should still be able to save the Chemical Axe 1927 portion of the stamp. Thanks for the idea.

the torch tip has more to do with the heat imparted into your workpiece than the fuel.

You're right. I think it is the Map-pro. Either way, my point was that a little insulation goes a long way. I have the TS 8000 torch by Bernzomatic and I can easily get a pole to an orange heat in a minute or two by making a little chamber surrounding the pole with ceramic wool. This could go a long way to keep you from busting chips off when hammering back mushrooming.

that may be something i might try. not sure if ill do it on an ax, but i like the idea!

for what its worth though, i have never had a chip come off the poll of an ax. it may be because i grind off anything that is seriously misplaced though. i figure the ax got that way from pounding, so pounding cant do to much damage.
