The Civilian threads are getting the newbie confused.

Is the G10 Civilian current production? It's not in the catalog. I thought the C12 catalog number of the Matriarch indicated the demise of the Civilian. Was/is the Civilian omitted from the catalog for the same reasons as the Matriarch?

No good reason for jumping to that conclusion other than that the Merlin was renumbered to C08 about concurrent with the G10 Harpy (also C08) getting discontinued.

Does the same basic catalog number cover not only handle variations but name changes - i.e. C08 Harpy and Merlin, C12 Civilian and Matriarch?

Newbie out. TIA

the number is more an indication of the blade IMO. the full model number indicates handle type. for instance

C08S--stainless handled harpy, serrated
C08GS--G-10 handled harpy, serrated
C08SBK--serrated, black (BK) zytel harpy

or

C12S--aluminum cilivian
C12GS--G-10 civilian
C12SBK--serrated, black zytel handle
C12SGY--serrated, grey zytel handle

hope this helps.

Dragonfly,

The Civilian has never been in any Spyderco catalog.

The C12GS (G-10) is not discontinued, the C12s (Aluminum/Kraton) is discontinued.

Spyderco ships each Civilian with a disclaimer. Spyderco feels the Civilian was a special knife for special purposes, non of which are for sport, utility or hunting. Thus you will not see it advertised or cataloged.

The year it was introduced it won Blade Magazine's "Knife of the Year" award and was appropriately pictured in same magazine.
