This is the first time I've used G10 in color and after sanding to 220 and then rubbing it up with steel wool the red is only obvious in strong sunlight! It looks more like a caramel with reddish undertones... I like the finish because it shimmers but it would be nice if it were RED still!

Any ideas?

for most colors you have to finish the G10 to a higher grit than 220. Although you did rub it with the steel wool it is still too rough. Finish it to 400 at least and the red will come back. Finish it to 1000 and you will get all the red back. Some folks use a light coat of mineral oil after they are done sanding, I do not do that.

When you got the piece new, It had a finished surface. Nice and smooth. As you sand, you open up the "grain". A higher grit finish will bring this back, and buffing even more.

Post pics when you finish.

It actually looked "redder" at the rough sanding stages, though it didn't have the lustre it has now...but I'll sand it to a finer grit!

Thanks for the advice!

A super light coat of Tru-oil will bring the color back. Put a DAB of tru-oil on with your fingertip, and ensure the whole surface if covered, then immediately dry it off with a lint free cloth/paper towel. The Tru-Oil will also seal it so that it doesn't get "nasty looking" from body oils and such from handling, but that texture will remain.

It does temporarily....but once the wax wears off, the G10 goes back to looking "nasty" again.

This is after 600 grit followed by buffing with shop towel loaded with a bit of green compound. It's about as red as the original piece but nothing like I had hoped. When wet the texture disappears.

It seems like the 0000 steel wool makes it more lustrous but darker.

that's a very nice looking kwaiken, the way I like them...with a little curvature. I like the point/kissaki.
