The incidence of people "beating" the light and/or running Red traffic lights is out of control here in Tulsa. When the light turns green you had _Still_ better look both ways before proceeding!!!!

I was wondering if this is a local thing or if it is getting to be a widespread problem.
One of the problems here in Tulsa is that many traffic lights have a very short Amber or Caution time. The light is green and turns amber only briefly before turning red.

Anybody else over the country having the same experiences?

How about aggresive drivers,ie, tailgaters, weaving in and out of traffic, speeding???

We seem to have a larger element of that lately also. It's becomeing a large problem here!

Khukuri FAQ

Here in South Florida the driving etiquette has degraded significantly in the past 5-10 years. Folks running red lights, making U-turns at major intersections (and tying up left turn traffic waiting for oncoming traffic to clear), parking every which way (regardless of who gets blocked in). And it's worse during the holidays.

At first I honestly thought it had to do with the high number of immigrants we attract here: people unused to driving with lax traffic enforcement, or not used to high traffic volume.

Now I think it's more a gradual erosion of society's sense of manners towards one another.

Yvsa, here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, every intersection is the equivalent of Russian roulette. People run red lights on a regular basis. And the intersections are often such that the cops cannot monitor the lights and still be in a position to safely pursue violators. This is why in some parts of the country the cities are resorting to photo-electronic monitoring, whereby when a car runs a red light, a photo is made of the license plate and a traffic ticket is issued to the registered owner.

Living in a small town, I think part of it is anonymity. You do something in a small town and people remember it was you. Big city, nobody knows who you are and you are nobody to them. It is sociopathic personality disorder, only now it's for everyone, not just the predators. If you don't know them, then they ain't human to you. Kitty Genovese.
Mob hysteria. Riot rage.

Same here in WNY, civil driving is becoming a thing of the past. 25% of the accidents in the newspaper have to do with stop signs, lights, etc.
They just gave some a year in jail for road rage. He stopped and beat up an 80+ year old guy for cutting him off & the oldtimer died a month later.
I also find many folks don't realize/don't care that the left lane is the fast/passing lane, but then again that's pumpkin city - they think they're in the fast lane only they're not even doing 50 <grin>.

Here in San Francisco, they've found out 13 places have the worst traffic/light beating/accidents.

I've been to 10 of them b/c they were near the various schools I attended. One particular green light lasts 12 seconds or less, a young person could make it to the halfway 'island' while running across the street.

I think it is epidemic. When I go out in the car I'll tell Yangdu, "Well, let's see who tries to kill us today," and that's the way I drive.

The skill I developed as a teen and young man as a hot rodder and racer has probably saved my life several times. I have been lucky, too.

You gotta be real careful these days. It is a rarity for anybody to offer courtesy or give you a break on the road.

Khukuri FAQ

I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area but am now studying in Los Angeles. Driving up north seems to be a more civilized activity than driving here in LA. People here are constantly running red lights, cutting you off, honking for no valid reason, and so on and so forth. I have no explanation for it, all I know is that driving here is no fun. So if anybody finds himself/herself driving in LA for their first time, be careful.

Here in London, Ontario, Canada running red lights is so rampant that the police are requesting cameras to moniter some intersections. I think it is more a sign of the times, everyone is in a hurry. Also, job and family pressures are higher than say 20 years ago.

After walking away from numberous crashes I have learned to take it easy and always wear my seatbelt. I'm not sure about the air bags though.
