Red Micarta 124???

I note on a famous auction site that there is offered a 124 described as follows:

"Colorful older style burgandy linen micarta handles (discontinued in 1981). Comes with sheath, box, ALL paperwork: Greetings from Al Buck paper and Customer Warranty Register, and even the tissue paper the knife was rolled in from the factory. Production year is 1978 (per the paperwork), but I bought the knife in 1979..."

It was my understanding, that the red micarta 124s were only made during a part of 1973 and had the lanyard hole(this one does not).

Could any of you pros set me straight on this issue?:confused:

Hey Robert!
You are right in your presumptions. I saw the knife when it came up and it sure fits blacks' profile and looks to be black. Perhaps an over-zealous seller??? If you are still not convinced, ask the vendor for some more pix-

Well fellow's,

I could be wrong.....but one of our big time 124 collectors who has posted many photo's for us.....posted a few photo's of a table full of 124's and it appears that he has both a redhead with the hole and a redhead without a hole....but I could be wrong it could have just been the lighting. However, I don't think that is the case.

I did, on 3/2/08, and here is the reply:

"The pictures are the best I can take with the camera that I have (sorry). They are almost black in the inside light, but have that deep black/purplish look to them if sunlight hits. Doesn't look brown at all to me. The Buck collector's guide officially states the handles as "burgandy". Thanks for the question (it's a good one) S.W"

I have also advised the seller of the concerns expressed in my earlier post. It was sent late 3/4/08 and thus may not have as yet been read.

Thank you for the response, Dave.:thumbup:

JB, again I certainly don't have even a 1/100th of the knowledge that is found in this forum. I do note that Joe Houser's preliminary data sheet on the 124s, only list the 1973 version for the red-head with lanyard hole. Nothing concerning a red head in either 1978 or 1979, although the data sheet is not too informative for the period 1974-1980. the dates listed in the offering.
I have a couple of red heads and both have the lanyard hole.

JB, sure looks like one doesn't it. Can't help but notice the scale rivets which look a little different but may be just the lighting and the angle of the picture. I did check back to the auction site and note that the burgundy printing on the knife box shows clearly while the scales appear black.

JB

Somehow the entire handle looks slimmer etc. I hope EEE will appear and provide more information about that knife. One off? How many? When made?

These are the only redheads I am familiar with.

I sure thought it was black :D
I didnt even read the description... ;)

I wouldn't assume a knife bought in 1979 was made in that year. The knife could have easily been made earlier. The lack of a pommel hole is a problem. While Buck is supposed to have offered the burgundy micarta on request, my understanding was that they stopped that practice prior to eliminating the pommel hole. I have, however, seen lots of 124s reworked with burgundy micarta without the pommel hole.

Here a a couple of photos of mine. You can see that it is really dark, but maroon none the less. My wife actually thought it was black until I showed it to her under a good light. It was even described as black by the seller. Perhaps Joe can tell us if there were various shades of red or maroon that were used back in the early 70's.

I agree that the year a knife was purchased is not an indicator of its age--but--the paperwork accompanying the knife is dated 12/78.

I should apologize for posting the misleading pics of the redheads, they are not that red--in fact they are very dark just as Mike Kerons' redhead.

I do note that the seller has not included my questions in the offering.

Nice knife, Mike.:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks Telechronos! The lines are not scratches but a poor job of wiping the blade clean before taking the pictures. You'll notice in the group photo that I did a similarly poor job on the klinkhamer 124 with stag & walnut scales. :o

Has this auction ended yet??? Please post a link when it does. I checked my most famous site (even spelling Burgundy correctly) but didn't see anything. Note: I'm only interested in *after* the auction closes/ends. :D

FWIW, I have a black Micarta 124 and love it.:thumbup:

Scooter scum. Wow, like all bikers carry a knife

I was kinda puzzled about that..."biker knife"...Does that mean that somewhere, there's a lawnmower missing a blade???

Just WTF is a "biker knife"???

When I went looking in Pennsylvania for a CB550, I took my 560...Sure enough, someone shoved a piece of rope at me and said "cut!"...So I did...And ended up with two CB550's...(only one title, but that's to be expected)... :)
