Red Micarta 124???

I went to my local watering hole where Wookie works the other day.
For some reason, I didn't have my Intrepid 187 with me.
One of the locals asked "Goose, where's your big knife you usually wear?".

Replied, "I'm travelling light today" and showed him my 889SBMF clipped in my pants pocket. He laughed and pulled out 110 "assisted" clone.

I reached in my vest and out came the Vaquero Grande. He bought me a beer :)

Scooter scum...

A pic of that Cold Steel Vaquero Grande next to a burgundy woody 124 to keep this thread related ;)

well i have read this thread and decided i would drop a pair of dimes and find out..
the early information on the 124's is a tad fuzzy
per a former custom shop employee...and a former pete's custom shop person ...
the red micarta was used on 124's only on request tell early 80's
there was also other colors of micarta including
white and brown canvas used on request and
all these materals were only while supplys lasted..
these were not avable to the general public except throught the custom shop
and then only if you knew you could ask for it...
per this information ... only ones with date codes would not have micarta
however corioun was used also on a few and some had a white materal maby linen micarta...
this may not cleare any thing up
buck head waters are always murky..

So why should I post my opinion here? Someone will just quote me later when I am inevtiably proved wrong!:rolleyes::D

I did not have a whole lot of information on the red handled 124's when I wrote the data sheet. I had a lot of black handled knives and enough collaborating evidence to support the "theory" that the red micarta was used on the 124 in 1973 and the majority of those will have the blocky looking handle and pommel with a lanyard hole. Should be in a 2 piece yellow box.

I checked that auction and could not tell from the pictures what color the handle is. The box is, according to my info, not correct for the red micarta. The sheath is correct.
According to my info, we stopped using that style of sheath in about 1973 so it does not belong with that paperwork.
Having said all of the above, and having totally blown the auction description to bits, let me just say one more thing...Maybe I am totally wrong. I know that must come as a huge shock to most of you and for that I apologise...:foot::rolleyes::barf:

By the way, one of the things that makes up my body of knowledge, the body I use to put together the data sheet on the 122/124, are auctions. When I started the research, I collected pictures of quite a few auctions for complete units. The key was, collaborating evidence. If I were to pull out all my 124 info again, I am betting I will see things about this auction that just dont jive with what I have seen repeated over and again.
If I had to bet, I would say that everything about that knife is correct, except that it is actually black, not red or burgundy. All the red handles I have seen were red, or at least enough red so as not be be confused with black.
The other thing I use for data sheets is discussion with fellow knife guys because two heads are always better than one. :)

Two more cents? Both my maroon Bucks (124 and 106) look maroon or burgandy in most light. I have found that royal purple is the very best background to "pop" the difference, if EEE will let me use his description.(?). Like My Friend Joe says- the maroon almost always looks to have a reddish cast! My 106 took a trip back to Post Falls and the refurbishment made the maroon even more outstanding than before. I know of another maroon 106 I see from time to time over in Indiana that looks red, ALL the time. The darned knife in the listing just looks too black to me, Tele', but see if our seller-guy will find some royal purple backing and snap you (all of us) another shot.
Okay, that outta be two cents worth?

Hi Dave,

Well I have to say that the redhead that Mike got off that auction site looked jet black in every one of the 5-6 photos posted. Only one had a slight reddish brown cast to it (to my eyes). The seller even called it black.....Mike took a chance and it paid off for him. That said...I agree with you brother!!! Try to get the seller to send you some better photo's.

Hey John!
I found two more pennies...I remember Mike's win and one of the photos did indicate maroon. I also want to re-state what Joe pointed out about the scales as a generality. The scales on my redhead 124 are blocky and not the svelte rounded contours of most laterr black micarta versions. I don't know why the 122/124 knives of '73 and '74 were so blocky handled? Now to cloud the water further: The gray micarta never seemed to suffer the squared-off handle shape in this same time period. Why? Who can say....? Joe, Larry, Richard....any speculation? I don't recall ever seeing the gray girls being chunky. None of my grays are at any rate. Perhaps that tidbit is helpful to you, Tele'? It seems to me the one on the chopping block presently is a wonderfully rounded permutation, no?

Dave

LOL Trax. Actually, I did it as a point of reference for ya...not to annoy ya. I'm not even certain which gal you were referencing...but I knew it was on the bar's long gone website.

Ya know, I don't have one single micarta knife. Buck or otherwise. :(

DAVE, I AM NOT SURE WHICH YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT "ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK." IF YOU ARE REFERRING TO THE ONE IN THE AUCTION,THE LATER 124 BLACK MICARTAS ARE MORE ROUNDED BUT (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF EEEs REDHEAD) I HAVEN'T SEEN A ROUNDED REDHEAD. I STILL HAVEN'T HEARD WHETHER OR NOT EEEs REDHEAD IS FACTORY OR THEREAFTER.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN CONCERNING ABOUT VARYING COLORS, I THINK IT IS ALL A MATTER OF LIGHT. THE REDS THAT I HAVE ARE ALL ABOUT THE SAME HUE. BUT IN DIFFERENT LIGHT THEY ARE STRONGLY RED, MAROON OR NEARLY BLACK. THE DARKER PIC BELOW IS WHAT I NORMALLY SEE. THE LIGHTER ONE IS JUST A MATTER OF ADDITIONAL LIGHT.

Wow Tele,

I'm strangely envious of the hoard of Red headed gals you've got in your accumulation....LOL. Thanks for sharing your photo's. I hope EEE will shed some light on his odd 124....I've been wondering about it for a long time and never thought to ask:o.

I will be adding pics and more info the first of next week.
I am making an attempt to make pics of all 30 years 122/124 tang stamps ,sheaths, handle
and box variations.

I have added some unrefined photos(they will change from time to time) in my signature line and I will be getting advice and help from some of our Buck buddies to fill in any
holes.
I will add descriptions with the pics as I progress.
Feel free to e-mail me with any advice or questions .

I note that the auction knife that started this thread has a revised description that clears up the issue------:

"NOTE: The handles on the knife are definately black. It was made in 1978 well after the first true purple burgandy handles were discontinued by the factory. I listed this knife by my knife book description which used the word "burgandy" in the text. Sorry for any confusion"

Case closed

oh yea ...
JOE we always love to hear from you!!!
if nothing else you always give us a starting point to work from!!!

EEE, Think about offering your photos for the model description area on the BCC website. Good photos ARE a way of writing...300$s

Ya know, after looking at the pics with the hachets, I am wondering if I do indeed have a micarta knife (Scimitar). I always thought the one I had looked like phenolic (sp?) but I recall reading somewhere they were micarta.
Kine a thread jack...but I am wondering. Anyone know?

Send me that pic Trax and I'll ID it. The Florence.

Goose!
You, in fact, have a micarta BUCK Scimitar if it is the black handled one!!! Buck made a run numbered to 100 and then generally produced the black micarta for a while. Not too many btw! It took some doing but I captured the burlwood and black micarta Scimitars both #64 and they look awesome in the display :)
Ain't it nice to stumble upon a lost treasure in the chest? One of those- "Oh Yeah...I got that!" type of thingys. Ah, the opulent life we lead..........!!!!!!!!

Dave

Dave:

I have the black handled 901 with the number 63 on the blade (not 63/100 but just 63). Is that the black micarta to which you refer? I will post a pic if you prefer.

Bob
