Hi guys

Yesterday I saw at my local Bass Pro store a whole line of RedHead knives made of 440 steel. Particularly I was looking at the "Expedition Fixed Blade" and I was surprised to see a claimed hardness of 58-60 HRC. I assume the "440" is 440A if it isn't 7CR17MoV. As those steels are mostly hardened in the 55-57 HRC rnage, is it possible to bring them up to 60 HRC? Wouldn't that take a huge toll on the toughness? Just asking, trying to add to my (very) limited knowledge about steels.

I assume it's Chinese so what ever it's called you have no idea what it is unless you get chemical analysis ! Sorry but I don't trust any of it !

claimed Rockwell might be a typo?

I don't think it's a typo, they have 58-60 HRC written in big bold letters on the back of the packages and are advertising the 440 as if it was at least CPM154. If it's true, it's just great (and at around $30). If it's not true, as it doesn't come from aliexpress, than it's sad. Not that I am planning to buy that knife, I was just curious.

"440 steel" is the point when you dont buy the knife, unless you want a beater/junker to play with. Who knows what it is.

For around 30 dollars it's hard to criticize. At that price if it's calling you, grab it. If it turns out to be junk it's not that big of loss If you don't grab it you'll always be wondering about it.
