Rediscovered SAK utility

Hey guys,

I hope you don't mind this post as I am a real die-hard Spyderco fan.

I recently rediscovered the utility of my SAK spartan. It's a sharp useful multi-tool that is not as intimidating to NKP's as my delica, native, or navigator.

Now I carry both, one Spydie in my right pocket and my Swiss Army knife in my left pocket. Now I can take out my SAK in a crowded public place and not catch stares. I can tighten screws, open bottles and cans, and open wine bottles.

Forgive me this statement, but I think Spyderco has met it's match in out of the box sharpness with SAK's. It's a great companion to my Spydie's.

Any of you guys out there do the same?

I just wanted to share. :)

i think i'll be carrying my old soldier with my bm43MC in may when i'll be riding the metrorail. i can use the soldier for wirestripping/boxes in class without scaring sheeple and the 43 for SD. too many crazy people hang around/ride the metro to go without a backup... i'm looking at other folders (710, 806) to replace it though as it's rather large and i dont want to risk getting it taken.

I usually EDC carry a SwissTool or Leatherman since they have full size pliers and I generally use those a lot but I've still been thinking about switching that out with a SAK but I can't ever seem to decide on which one. I haven't had one since I was like 10 or 11 (that was before I even knew what a Spyderco was) but I do seem to remember the knife blade being remarkably sharp out of the box like Spydercos. What would be really cool is if Spyderco would come out with a multi-tool like SAK's or something with full size needle nose pliers. :D

When I carry a FB than a SAK is in my pocket aswell (Hunter or Compact) - the gentle alternative for cutting around NKP :D

i read this thread, dug out my old spartan & sharpened it for the first time in the 12 years i've had it :D

I got a 64M Swiss memory for Christmas and It hasn't left my keychain yet.
I used the red LED light the other day in a dark parking lot and I've used the pen more than once.

I always carry a SAK Tinker along with a larger locking blade knife. Very useful combination.

Crazy timing of this thread!!!!!

Last weekend, I misplaced my Acr 4+ (edc flashlight)...I was now faced with a new edc flashlight decision.

I also carry a small sebenza as well a a few other types of single blade folders. Well, everytime I load my pocked with my edc, I always wish that there was more utility that the single blade.

So, as I was searching for a new light ( I wanted cheap just in case I found my Arc) at the Sharper Image, I walked past Edwards Luggage and spotted their SAK display. Well, I had to look...

I walked away with the perfect EDC. I purchased the Spartan Lite! Wow, what a great tool.

The Sebenza and William Henrys sit in the display case while my Spartan Lite get the pocket. I also do not need to carry a separate flashlight unless I need some real lighting power...

So, I too revived my SAK enthusiasm. Last time I owned one must have been 30 years ago!

Great suggestion....but the good news is that I found my Arc. It, however, is sitting next to my other knives, on the shelf.

Vic. hunters and soldiers are hard to beat , whatever else I carry I always have one or other .

Either a Vic' Fieldmaster or Recruit goes along where ever my larger folder does.

I can't wait to get my next SAK, I have sent off a Vic' Super Tinker to have Elk antler scales to match my Buck 110 PCS Elk.

I always carry a SAK as part of my EDC (along with two or three other blades). For a while now, the Cybertool 41 has stayed with me wherever I go. Easy to care for, easy to clean and definitely 'sheeple' friendly, I can take out the knife and use it anywhere without causing a ruckus. Their sharpness, to me is about the same, if not more, as Spyderco is out of the box. I say this as, one night while watching a movie, I accidently closed the large blade of a SAK Swisschamp on my finger. It made a nice, smooth cut that took about three days to heal closed. This was about a day after I took it out of the box new.

I always have a SAK on hand along with my locking folders or fixed blades. If forced to carry only one knife, it would be a SAK, hands down....

I usually EDC my Vic SAK Hunstman, but it's the new one with the white LED light! Very handy. I also have a bottle opener, tweezers, toothpick, can opener, screw drivers (flat, phillips), corkscrew, wood saw, scissors, etc. If I need a magnifier I whip out my Swiss card, which I recently noticed has cracked from being carried in my wallet, which I sit on as it's in my back pocket. The one tool I wish I had in addition would be the metal file/saw. Might have to start EDC'ing my Swisschamp on my belt. :)

Thanks for all the replies. This was originally posted in the Spyderco forum. I'd like to rephrase the question in this thread.

How many of you guys EDC an SAK, and what model, and what else with it?

Mike

I've had a sak in my pocket for the last thirty years. There has been a few models come and go but I always come back to the tinker or hiker. It is always teemed up with an Opinel number 8 or 9.

In the woods I'll have a sheath knife along, like a red wood handled Mora, or a Jarvanpaa pukko.
