Reducing collection

As I am going to reduce my collection, I have realised that I never took a "family picture" (without SAKs and Opinels...) before most will be gone.

Have you already gone though a similar stage where you have to let some go...
how have you managed it?
How did you felt after selling some knives?

Yeah last year I sold some of my Busse knives I never used. Some I wish I hadn't sold but others went to people who were really looking for them and would enjoy them so that made me feel better about it. I used some of the funds to buy an expensive (for me) folder I really wanted.

I sold pretty much everything and bought a Sebenza. I'm not big on having stuff just to have it so now I have a knife I carry everyday and a big folder and a wood carving knife and it's great.

I whittled down my "collection" to six knives--four folders and two fixed. Kept the ones I actually needed and then a couple (Esee and Mini Grip) that I just like to have for fun. I feel so much better after getting rid of all the extra fluff. For me this is the perfect amount, and I don't intend on increasing the number. If I get another knife then one of these will have to go to make room for it.

1. Custom Benchmade Griptilian - work EDC
2. Southern Grind Spider Monkey - off duty EDC
3. Spyderco Salt I - beach & kayak
4. Benchmade Ritter Mini Grip with Cuscadi micarta scales - alternate
5. Mora Companion - hiking pack
6. Esee 4 - truck

I started carrying slip joints paired with a small fixed blade. All my modern folders are sitting around. I did the same switch about 2 years ago and then went back to modern folders. I am worried I'll have another swing in taste and be repurchasing knives. So for now they sit. I don't know what to do.

OP - nice collection! Yes - during last Xmas season I had to sell some folders in order to acquire an XM-18 and a Sebenza. I find myself not missing much what's been sold, maybe except that ZT 0200. I guess it is because I am more of a knife- "trier" than a collector or a frequent/heavy user (two folders are enough to take care of all my cutting tasks)

I have been "exploring" knives for a while
At the beginning everything as started with getting a 0350
But when I got my inkosis and my 0630 they have changed my perception
I am more an user that a looker and those ones have really "changed" my standards

Knives are durable goods. I pack up the ones I'm not feeling and put them downstairs in the safe. Then when the need for novelty pops up, I switch them out.

I've culled my collection several times over the years. Great feeling to be lean and mean again, however, each time I always end up having a couple of regrets.

I've sort of settled into a groove of having around a dozen modern and a dozen traditional keepers and the rest just come for a brief fling and go.

Im doing it right now. Going to be down to 2 zt0450's, 2 pm2's, and a ppt. No regrets though, its still money in the pocket. Sometimes there's a few id like back, but then again there are always alot of new knives to try.

I'm going through a major downsizing right now. I came to the conclusion that I'd rather have a few really nice knives than a whole bunch of kinda nice ones. At my peak I had around 150 knives, I'm down to about 20. My goal is single digits and then to focus on customs. I've sold some, traded some away, and gave away most.

I have no regrets at all. As some others have said, it's liberating to be down to one knife roll with a couple left out for carrying. I've never been much of an accumulator, and knives are the first thing I've collected since I was a kid collecting baseball cards and comic books.

Yeah, downsizing feels good and bad. I feel like my personal knife collection/selection has evolved quite a bit over the years. It used to be almost completely high end with the occasional $100 knife introduced just for the sake of recreational B/S/T or to do a YouTube video. Now my knives consist of 8 total. I have 6 Spydies, which are the bread and butter of my selection. And I have two Sebenzas which I really only take out after work and on weekends. Where as I used to feel completely under knifed if I did not have a Seb, SnG, an XM-18, or some other fancy overbuilt fixed blade, I am content with a Delica or an a Endura.
Over the years there have been MANY that I've sold and then replaced. Some, the second time around solidified my appreciation for the model, and some solidified my lack of enthusiasm for it. Either way, I keep learning and I'm certainly still enjoying this hobby!
