What gear do you feel it is important to carry backups for?

How many methods of starting a fire or purifying water do you need? 1, 2, 12? :D

Let's see
Fire-3
water-2
compass-1 sometimes 2
shelter-2 or more. garbage bag, tarp, foil blanket, etc.
signaling-1. fox 40
food-1. fish kit
knives-2
This is dedicated gear though. There's a lot of gear I have that overlap. Compass can be used as signal mirror, hatchet can be used as a knife when I carry it, and so on.

Sounds like a good estimate for me.:thumbup:

I have a Camel Bak Ambush that I really like for day hikes:

1. Fire (multiple ignition sources and multiple tinder)

2. Knives (fixed blade in pack, medium folder in pocket or pack strap, small folder in pack, multi-tool in pack)

3. Navigation (good compass in pocket, back up in pack, button compass on hiking staff)

4. Shelter (space blanket, HeatSheets emergency bivy, large garbage bag all in the pack).

5. Signal (cell phone in pocket, whistle and signal mirror in pack)

socks x3

could be an extra bag, mittens, tinder, filter, rag, etc. etc. (not to mention the dry feet)

I am going to agree with hollowdweller.

I am big on lights and fire, but will ad most times I have several edged tools with me as well.
